🚗 You did witness it, but be aware of the conditions 🚗

📕Story Background

There was a traffic accident in the city center. A car hit and injured two pedestrians before fleeing the scene. Police Victor quickly responded to the report and headed to the location.

After arriving at the scene, Victor found a passerby who had witnessed the accident. The witness was in a panic. When he saw Victor, he approached him and said he had noted the getaway car's license plate number. He said, “It happened so quickly! The car sped off after hitting two people. I was in my car and saw the plate number in my rearview mirror. I wrote it down on my phone.” He then showed Victor the note. The number was “18UA01.” Victor thanked the witness on the spot. He then quickly called his colleagues and asked them to look for the car with the license plate 18UA01.

A few hours later, Victor got a call from one of his colleague who informed him that there were no vehicles with the license plate 18UA01 in this city. To be thorough, they checked all cars with similar plate numbers, including

18UA81, 18UA10, 10AU81, 18AU01 — four of them in total.

After hearing about these four license plate numbers, Victor quickly identified the car involved in the accident. Do you know which license plate number belonged to the car causing the traffic accident?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

🔍Known Clues

  1. The withness saw the license plate number of the vehicle involved in the accident through the rearview mirror of his car.
  2. There were no stains on the license plate of the car causing the traffic accident.

----- Previous answer (Silent Testimony) -------

The thief is the second suspect, the man who was deaf-mute. The police captain might have said something like, "You can leave now," and the deaf-mute person’s reaction could have revealed that he was pretending to be deaf-mute. This suggests that the man who claimed to be deaf-mute is the suspect.
