📕Story Background
On a Saturday night, a burglar broke into a musical instrument store by smashing a side door window. The thief pried open three cash boxes, stealing 1,225 kroner, and took a trumpet from the display, placing it in a trumpet case before fleeing.
The police identified three suspects: teenage apprentices Hansen, Legge, and Hedley. Detective Sorensen gathered them in the interrogation room and handed each a pen and paper.
“I need your help,” Sorensen said. “Write an essay, imagining you’re the burglar: how would you break in, steal something, and cover your tracks? Be detailed. You have 30 minutes.”
The suspects complied, and Sorensen asked them to read their essays aloud.
Hansen’s Account:
“On Saturday, I scoped out the store’s backyard. That night, I smashed a glass window in a side door, took 1,225 kroner from the cash boxes, and grabbed a trumpet from the display before slipping out.”
Legge’s Account:
“I’d cut a hole in the cupboard window with a gold knife so no one suspects me. I wouldn’t make noise prying cash boxes but would grab the trumpet, put it in a box, and hide it under my coat.”
Hedley’s Account:
“I’d pry open the side door at night, wearing gloves to avoid prints. I’d steal the money and a trumpet from the display. I’d use the money to buy gloves and sell the trumpet later when things cooled down.”
After listening, Sorensen pointed at one suspect and asked, “Tell me, why do you do such bad things?”
Who is the thief? Can you figure it out?

----- Previous answer (Painter Paralyzed) -------
B James
The dead man's left hand had gone numb two months ago, but at the scene he was still holding a gun in his left hand, proving that he had been murdered.
Of the two visiting guests, only James, who had returned from Paris two days earlier, did not know that he had a problem with his left hand, so James was the murderer.
