📕Story Background

The deceased man was a well known painter and the cause of death was a bullet to the head. At the time, he was holding a pistol in his left hand, and outwardly it appeared as if he had died by suicide.

Inspector Chalks launched an investigation, questioning the characters involved. There were three suspects: the wife of the deceased and two visitors.

The wife of the deceased stated that he was already dead when she brought the two visitors into the parlor, having been busy in the kitchen preparing refreshments for the guests.

One of the two visiting guests was named James. He was an old lover of the wife of the deceased, and had gone to Paris three years ago, returning only two days before.

One is called Jack. He is also a painter. He repeatedly visited the deceased at home in the past few days, he said the deceased plagiarized his work, so he came to pursue.

However, the deceased was not without a motive to commit suicide. The caretaker of the family had told the police that two months ago, the deceased's left hand became numb after he fell ill and he could no longer hold a paintbrush, which made him very depressed. In the end, the Inspector determined that one of the three must be the murderer.
