🌻 Common assumptions sometimes work, sometimes don't 🌻

📕Story Background
The air inside the Apex Glasshouse is thick, smelling of wet potting soil and ozone. At the center of the dome, the climate-controlled pedestal that once held the "Solaris Strain"—a priceless, genetically modified seed pod—has been smashed open.
You arrive at 7:00 PM, as the evening shadows are stretching across the floor. You walk the scene with Silas, the groundskeeper. You note the physical state of the environment as you walk: The eastern glass doors have been propped open with a heavy bag of fertilizer, letting in a cool breeze. The center of the dome is dominated by a sprawling, 50-foot-long bed of giant, mature sunflowers. They are in full, glorious bloom, their heavy yellow heads drooping slightly under their own weight. The automatic sprinkler system is currently hissing, casting a fine mist over their thick, rigid stalks.
Near the western wall of the dome, a tall aluminum ladder rests beneath a shattered ventilation fan. A pair of muddy work gloves sits on the bottom rung.
Silas wipes condensation from his forehead. "I saw the whole thing, Detective, but I was trapped," he says, pointing to the ladder. "I was up there fixing that western vent at exactly 5:00 PM. The late afternoon sun was absolutely blinding, baking the entire western half of the greenhouse. I had to climb down because the heat was unbearable."
He gestures toward the massive bed of flowers separating the western wall from the center pedestal. "I ducked behind the sunflowers to get some shade. As everyone knows, they follow the sun, so every single one of those massive yellow faces was turned perfectly toward the western glass, soaking up the late afternoon rays. The backs of their thick, green heads gave me perfect cover from the glare."
Silas sighs, kicking at the dirt. "While I was catching my breath in the shade, I saw a guy in a ski mask sprint through the eastern doors, smash the pedestal, grab the Solaris seed, and run right back out. I yelled, but I couldn't push through the dense sunflower stems fast enough to catch him."
You look at the smashed pedestal, the open eastern doors, the ladder on the west wall, and finally, the long rows of mature, blooming sunflowers.
"Silas," you say, pulling out your notepad. "It's a great story. But you weren't standing behind those flowers at 5:00 PM."
(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

----- Previous answer (Gone the Legendary Topaz) -------
Correct Answer: Lady Vivienne
The Logic Chain:
The Deduction Logic: The solution lies in the principle of Solubility and Temperature.
- The Environment: Lady Vivienne’s tea is described as "extra-cold" and "packed to the rim with ice."
- The Science: The ability of a liquid to dissolve a solid (like sugar) depends heavily on temperature. In hot tea, sugar dissolves almost instantly. However, in ice-cold tea, the solubility of sucrose drops significantly.
- The Flaw: Lady Vivienne claims she stirred in six full packets of sugar and watched "every single grain dissolve" until the tea was "perfectly clear."
- The Reality: In a glass of tea that cold, the liquid would have become saturated very quickly. The remaining three or four packets of sugar would have simply settled at the bottom of the glass as a thick, white, gritty pile. It would be impossible for that much sugar to vanish into a freezing liquid.
- Conclusion: Lady Vivienne was so focused on creating an alibi about her "sweet tooth" that she forgot she was holding a freezing drink. She likely used the "shattered glass" distraction to snatch the topaz and drop it into the bottom of her tea glass, hoping the "undissolved sugar" she should have had would hide the yellow stone.
