Story Background

During the opening night gala for the new opera 'The Phantom' at the Paris Opera House, beneath the glittering chandeliers, the lead soprano, Isabelle Duval, was found dead in the stage machinery pit below. She had fallen from near a critical counterweight mechanism at the very top of the stage flies. However, initial examination revealed that the ceremonial dagger she was supposed to be clutching had blood on its tip—blood that wasn't hers. Detective Renard was called to the scene. The opera house smelled of rosin, perfume, and a faint hint of rust. The victim, twenty-five-year-old Isabelle, hailed as 'Paris's new star,' had delivered a breathtaking performance that night. Directly above her point of impact were the complex stage lift mechanisms. The connecting rod of a massive metal box (a counterweight) used for balancing showed signs of recent loosening. Three key individuals who had last interacted with her were present.

Suspect Statements

Suspect 1: Max Leblanc, the tenor playing the male lead. He stated, "After the show, Isabelle asked me to meet in her backstage dressing room, saying she had something important to discuss about 'future collaboration.' But when I got there, I only found a note she'd left, saying 'Changed location to the machinery pit. It concerns your secret.' I was startled, thinking she'd discovered I'd secretly made her high notes more difficult (to make her look bad), but I never went to the machinery pit. I'm afraid of heights and the dark. I was later drinking in the lounge; the bartender can vouch for me."

Suspect 2: Sophia Rossi, the mezzo-soprano and Isabelle's understudy and close friend. Eyes glistening with tears, she said, "Isabelle was radiant tonight; I was genuinely happy for her. We hugged backstage before the show for mutual encouragement. She said after her success, she'd tell me a secret that 'could change our relationship.' But after the performance, I was in the audience looking for friends to celebrate, and I didn't see her. She... she seemed under a lot of pressure lately, secretly taking some sedatives. I could sense it."

Suspect 3: Oliver Carter, the stage manager. He looked exhausted. "The machinery pit is under my jurisdiction. I inspected all equipment before the show; it was absolutely safe. Miss Duval's fall is a tragic accident. Perhaps her curiosity got the better of her, she climbed up to see the mechanism, and accidentally lost her footing. She was always fascinated by the stage machinery and asked me many questions about the counterweights. As for the dagger? It's a stage prop. The props team checks and wipes them down before every performance; the stain could be paint."

Known Clues

1. A small, not-quite-dried puddle of oil with a special smell in the machinery pit.

2. Blood on the prop dagger in Isabelle's hand is Type B, mismatching her Type A blood.

3. A clear print of a large men's leather glove with a diamond pattern on the machinery pit staircase handrail.

4. Fresh and inconsistent tool marks on the fixing nut of the counterweight's connecting rod.

5. On the back of the note found in Isabelle's dressing room, faint pencil writing: 'He knows everything. L.'

Questions and Discussion for YOU:

1. Who is the killer of Isabelle Duval?

2. How did the killer create the 'accidental' fall and set up misleading clues?
