📕Story Background

Just past midnight, in the dimly lit Mineral Hall of London's Natural History Museum, the body of Dr. Victor Harrington, a renowned curator, lay beside a specimen cabinet. He clutched a rare blue fluorite crystal in his right hand, with a fatal blunt-force trauma to the back of his head. No murder weapon was found.

The museum was closed for the night, and only four people had access: Victor himself, his nephew and assistant James Harrington, mineralogist Dr. Liam Carter, and the on-duty security guard, Sarah Miller. The crime scene was a semi-enclosed research area, and access logs showed no unusual entries during the incident.

Upon arrival, the detective questioned the three suspects.

James claimed he spent the evening repairing pottery in the Egyptian exhibit and produced a work log.

Liam said he was conducting nighttime research in the adjacent Paleontology Hall and came running when he heard a cry, only to find Victor already on the ground.

Security guard Sarah stated she patrolled on her fixed route, passing the Mineral Hall at 11:30 and 12:15, seeing nothing amiss, and stressed that all access controls and cameras were functioning normally.

The investigation uncovered several clues:

1. The specimen cabinet for the fluorite crystal Victor held was empty; its label indicated it had been signed out by Liam for research a week prior, yet the victim held it.

2. An empty, non-museum-branded energy drink can was found under James's workbench.

3. The maintenance hatch leading to the ventilation duct above the research area showed fresh signs of being opened, with faint dust scrapes inside.

4. Security footage showed Liam leaving the Paleontology Hall for the washroom at 11:40 and not returning until 12:10.

5. Deep within Victor's desk drawer, the detective found a recently amended, not-yet-notarized will, leaving the bulk of his estate and collection to Liam, not James.

Suspects

James Harrington:

"I was in the Egyptian Hall all evening restoring those damned pottery pieces. Yes, my uncle Victor and I argued about the inheritance a few days ago, but that doesn't mean I'd kill him. This is my work log, see, all the times are clearly recorded."

Liam Carter:

" I did borrow Victor's blue fluorite for my research, but I returned it last week. I left it right on his desk. Around 11:40, I went to the washroom. On my way back, I thought I heard a muffled thud from the corridor. I rushed in and found Victor down. I was horrified and immediately called for security."

Sarah Miller:

" I patrol strictly every half hour, by the book. I passed the Mineral Hall entrance at 11:30 and again at 12:15. The door was closed, it was quiet inside, most lights were off. The security cameras and access systems were all functioning normally. No sign of any intrusion."

🔍Known Clues

1. The fluorite crystal in Victor's hand should have been checked out and returned by Liam a week prior, yet it appeared with the victim.

2. The empty energy drink can found under James's workbench is not a brand from the museum's supplied vending machines.

3. The maintenance hatch to the ventilation duct showed fresh opening marks and internal dust scrapes, though it doesn't lead directly into the research area.

4. Liam has an unaccounted-for period of 30 minutes (from 11:40 to 12:10).

5. Victor's new will leaves the vast majority of his inheritance to Liam, which is highly unfavorable for James.

----- Previous answer (A Taste to Die For: The Michelin Cellar Murder) -------

Culprit:Claude Moreau

Motive:Laurent was preparing to sell Le Chêne d’Or to a hotel chain, threatening the culinary legacy Claude had devoted his life to protecting. Claude had also recently argued with Laurent over the restaurant’s future and inheritance. Eliminating Laurent allowed Claude to stop the sale and preserve his position within the restaurant.

Deduction Logic — The Contradiction in the "Perfect Alibi":

Claude had the knowledge and materials to create the poison. The alcohol residue on Laurent’s mouth, the poisoned Burgundy bottle, and the bitter almond extract receipt linked directly to him. The cleaned tasting glass proved someone tried to erase evidence.

Crime Reconstruction:

Claude poisoned Laurent’s wine bottle with synthetic bitter almond extract, knowing Laurent’s tasting routine. After the murder, he cleaned the glass and blamed others.

Conclusion:

The poisoned bottle, laboratory receipt, and destroyed evidence form a clear chain. Claude Moreau is the killer.
