Story Background

Dr. Florence Byrne (56), a renowned botanist, is found dead in her private greenhouse at 7:15 AM by her groundskeeper. She lies face-down in the tropical orchid section. A deep laceration on the back of her skull. A bloodied brass watering can lies beside her — the apparent murder weapon.

The greenhouse is a Victorian glasshouse, 30m × 15m, heated to a constant 34°C with 85% humidity to maintain the tropical collection. The only entrance is a heavy iron door on the south side. It was unlocked when the groundskeeper arrived.

A rare Amorphophallus titanum (Corpse Flower) is in full bloom in the center of the greenhouse. This plant blooms once every 7-10 years, and when it does, it emits an overpowering odor of rotting flesh designed to attract carrion beetles. The smell is so potent it induces nausea, headaches, and dizziness within 10-15 minutes of exposure in an enclosed space. The bloom began opening at approximately 11:00 PM the previous night.

The victim's estate includes the main house, a guest cottage, and the greenhouse — set on 4 hectares of private land. Dr. Byrne was hosting two guests for the weekend to witness the rare bloom.

Suspect Statements

Prof. Arthur Byrne (61, Husband):

"Florence and I had separate bedrooms for years. The marriage was... a professional arrangement by the end. I went to bed at 10 PM. I took a sleeping aid — diphenhydramine, over the counter — you'll find the bottle in my bathroom. I didn't wake until Arthur Junior, our groundskeeper, started banging on the door. Florence often slept in the greenhouse during important blooms. I assumed she'd be there. I assumed wrong."

Dr. Priya Nair (41, Rival Botanist / Weekend Guest):

"I flew in from Singapore specifically to see the corpse flower bloom. Florence and I had a famous rivalry — we published competing papers on Amorphophallus pollination. But we'd buried the hatchet. That's why she invited me. I was in the guest cottage all night working on a manuscript. I went to bed around 1:30 AM. The cottage is 80 meters from the greenhouse — I couldn't see or hear anything."

Theo Cross (32, Graduate Student / Weekend Guest):

"Dr. Byrne was my PhD supervisor. Without her, my dissertation is dead. I have zero reason to harm her. I went to the greenhouse at 11:30 PM to see the bloom — it's a once-in-a-decade phenomenon, I wasn't going to miss it. I stayed about 20 minutes taking photos. The smell was unbearable. I went back to my room in the main house around midnight. I checked on Dr. Byrne in the greenhouse before I left — she was alive, taking measurements. I was the last person to see her alive, I guess."

Known Clues

Time of death: Estimated between midnight and 2:00 AM. The high greenhouse temperature accelerates rigor mortis and decomposition, making precise estimation difficult. Stomach contents and the corpse flower's bloom stage narrow it to 12:00 AM - 1:30 AM.

Peppermint oil: A half-empty bottle of peppermint essential oil is found on the greenhouse workbench near the body. Peppermint oil is a known folk remedy for masking the corpse flower's odor — it's applied under the nostrils. The bottle has Florence's, Theo's, and Priya's fingerprints on it.

The watering can: Brass, 4.5 kg when full. Blood and hair matching the victim on the base. Only Florence's fingerprints on the handle. Position: 1.2 meters from the body, to the left.

Florence's notebook: Open on the workbench. Last entry at 12:10 AM: "Tepals fully reflexed. Spadix temp 36.8°C. Odor intensity: 9/10. Theo visited — enthusiastic as always. Must remind Priya to take samples before she leaves."

CCTV at the estate gate: One camera covering the main drive. Recordings show:

• 11:15 PM: Theo walks from main house to greenhouse.

• 11:52 PM: Theo walks back from greenhouse to main house.

• 12:30 AM: Priya walks from guest cottage toward greenhouse.

• 12:58 AM: Priya walks back toward guest cottage.

• No further movement until 6:45 AM (groundskeeper arrives).

Priya's laptop: Last file saved at 1:15 AM. A manuscript draft with edit timestamps throughout the night. The document's version history shows steady typing activity from 10 PM to 1:15 AM, with a 28-minute gap between 12:28 AM and 12:56 AM.

Arthur's sleeping pills: Bottle of diphenhydramine 50mg in his bathroom. 8 pills remaining. Normal dosage is 1-2 pills. He refilled a 30-count bottle 10 days ago. 22 pills consumed in 10 days = 2.2 pills/day average. Consistent with chronic use. However, diphenhydramine at this dosage causes deep sedation for 6-8 hours in most people.

Theo's photos: Time-stamped phone photos of the corpse flower: 11:35 PM, 11:42 PM, 11:48 PM. Also found: a photo taken at 11:49 PM, accidentally capturing the reflection in the greenhouse glass of Dr. Byrne standing behind Theo, taking notes at her workbench. She is clearly alive.

Priya's clothing: The shirt Priya was wearing that night has a faint yellow smudge on the right cuff. Lab analysis identifies it as pollen from Amorphophallus titanum — the corpse flower. The pollen is only released during the first 4-6 hours of blooming (approximately 11 PM to 3-5 AM).

Mobile phone data: Florence's phone pinged a cell tower at 12:42 AM (an outgoing text to Priya: "Come to the greenhouse. You need to see the spadix at peak. Bring your sample kit."). Priya's phone pinged the same tower at 12:44 AM (reply: "On my way.").

The greenhouse floor: A section of the stone floor near the corpse flower is wetter than surrounding areas. A slip mark — a partial footprint in the condensation — is visible near where the body was found. The shoe size is approximately women's EU 38. Florence wore EU 39. Priya wears EU 38.
