💎 To lie about something, first make sure you've actually done it before 💎

📕Story Background
The humidity at the Wellington garden party was so thick you could practically carve it. At the center of the patio sat the "Sun of Jaipur," a legendary yellow topaz being auctioned for charity. For the event, it was displayed inside a heavy crystal bowl filled with decorative, jagged ice chunks to keep the display looking "cool" in the 95°F heat.
At exactly 4:00 PM, a tray of crystal glasses shattered nearby, creating a momentary distraction. When the guests looked back, the Sun of Jaipur was gone. The crystal bowl was still there, full of melting ice and water, but the gem had vanished.
You, the estate's head of security, close the garden gates and gather the four guests who were closest to the display table:
The Professor (Dr. Aris): Dr. Aris is squinting at his pocket watch, his linen suit wrinkled from the heat. "I was observing the refraction of the light through the display bowl," he says dryly. "The way the ice cubes float in the water creates a fascinating optical distortion. I was actually timing how long it took for the largest ice shard to melt. I didn't see anyone reach in during my observation, I was quite focused on the physics of the phase change."
The Socialite (Lady Vivienne): Lady Vivienne is fanning herself vigorously, her wide-brimmed hat casting a deep shadow over her face. "I was far too busy with my refreshment to notice a thief," she says, gesturing to her tall glass of extra-cold iced tea, which is packed to the rim with ice cubes. "I have a notorious sweet tooth, you know. I spent the last five minutes stirring six full packets of granulated sugar into my tea. I watched every single grain dissolve until the tea was perfectly clear and sweet. I didn't even have the time to look at the topaz."
The Gardener (Mick): Mick is standing near the hedges, wiping sweat from his brow with a grimy rag. "I was just doing my job, checking the soil moisture of the hydrangeas right behind the table," he grumbles. "The sun was hitting the display bowl so hard it was throwing a glare right into my eyes. I had to look away for a minute because it was like looking at a welder's torch. That's probably when someone grabbed it."
The Influencer (Chloe): Chloe is holding her phone high, searching for a signal. "I was trying to livestream the auction!" she pouts. "But the heat is making my phone glitch. I was staring at my screen the whole time, trying to get the 'Sparkle Filter' to lock onto the gem. One second it was there, and the next, the screen just showed an empty bowl of ice. I thought it was a lag in the app!"
From their description of the situation, can you tell who is the one lying? Whose alibi was the most suspicious.
(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

----- Previous answer (Thermal Equilibrium) -------
Correct Answer: Chet
The Logic Chain:
- The Environment: It is -15°F outside and very warm/humid inside the lodge (due to the fire, the cider, and the guests).
- The Physics: This is the "Spectacle Fog" effect. When glass is chilled to sub-zero temperatures, the molecules slow down. When that cold glass hits warm, moist air, the water vapor in the air instantly loses energy and turns into liquid droplets (condensation) on the surface of the lens.
- The Flaw: Chet claims he was outside for twenty minutes in a blizzard. If his glasses were truly that cold, they would have turned opaque with white fog the second he stepped into the warm Great Hall. He wouldn't be able to "adjust them" and see clearly; he would have been functionally blind for at least a minute while they acclimated.
- The Reveal: Because Chet's glasses remained perfectly clear, he was never outside. He likely hid in a nearby cold hallway or a closet, waited for the lights to go out, stole the diamond, and then faked his "arrival" through the front door to create an alibi.
