👮‍ You have the right to remain silent, but we'll catch you 👂

📕Story Background

There was a theft case at a waterfront house. When the police received the report, they rushed to the scene and arrested three suspicious individuals nearby.

The police brought the three suspects into the same room and asked them to explain why they were near the house:

The first suspect showed his passport and claimed he was a tourist with no connection to the theft case.

The second suspect made various gestures and babbling sounds, suggesting he was deaf-mute.

The third suspect said he was just there to deliver food, left the food at the door, and then left.

The police present recorded the testimonies of two of the suspects, but since no one could understood sign language, they couldn't question the third suspect further. The police chief suggested separating these three suspects and interrogating them individually.

Each suspect was brought into the room one at a time for questioning. During these interrogations, the police captain said only one sentence to each suspect. And then all of the three suspects left the room. Based on the interrogations, the police captain was able to determine who the thief was.

What do you think the police captain said? Who do you think is the most likely thief?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot.)

🔍Known Clues

  1. The police captain said just one sentence to each suspect and identified the murderer based on their reactions.
  2. The police escorted the three suspects directly into the interrogation room.
  3. After being arrested and brought to the police station, the three suspects were searched. Apart from their clothes, they had no other items on them, such as metal objects.
  4. The three suspects left the room on their own after their individual interrogations were completed.

----- Previous answer (Not Evaporated) -------

The person who lied was Tom, and he also killed John. It had rained the night before so the forest was wet everywhere. It can be seen from Mark’s answer that the rain was very heavy that day, because all the fruits on the fruit trees were knocked to the ground. The firewoods on the ground should be wet after the heavy rain, so it is impossible for Tom to use them. In addition, Tom also said that "the firewood in his hand only got wet after it fell to the ground", which further confirmed that he was lying. Therefore, the murderer is Tom.
