❄ Well, you may have witnessed it, but something's counterintuitive for sure ❄

📕Story Background

Late at night, burglars extinguished all the streetlights on Crown Street. They broke into the Golden Tennis Club, stealing valuable trophies, awards, expensive rackets, and other prized items. Inspector Hawk, assigned to investigate the case, was struggling to find clues when a middle-aged man appeared at the station holding a fluffy little dog, claiming he'd witnessed the entire crime.

Inspector Hawk nodded, inviting the witness to recount his story.

"Here's what happened," the man began. "Shortly after midnight, my dog Napoleon," he pointed affectionately at the small dog in his lap, "started whining, disturbing my sleep. So, I took him for a walk. When we reached Crown Street, I noticed it was completely dark. As I approached Cupid Street, I saw a truck parked right outside the club—"

"How far away were you?" Inspector Hawk interrupted.

The witness thought carefully and replied, "About 100 meters away—certainly no closer. I saw two men loading items from the club into the truck. After filling it, they quietly drove away without even turning on their headlights." He reached into his pocket and handed over a piece of paper, "I even wrote down the truck’s license plate number immediately. I thought it might be helpful."

Inspector Hawk glanced thoughtfully at the witness and the dog Napoleon, then turned to his assistant, "Sergeant Sack, do we have an empty cell tonight?"

"Yes," Sack replied, puzzled.

"Good. Please escort this gentleman and his dog Napoleon there for the night. Treat the dog kindly and give it water. After all, the dog is innocent, but his owner is an extraordinary witness."

Outraged, the witness jumped up, "What do you mean by this?"

Inspector Hawk calmly replied, "Whether you made this story up or deliberately tried to mislead us, you’re certainly not an honest man."

Why did Inspector Hawd say that?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

----- Previous answer (The Frostbitten Betrayal) -------

Mrs. Burton's story had a major flaw: When Detective Sleuth entered her home, he found it comfortably warm enough to remove his coat, hat, gloves, and scarves—even though it was bitterly cold outside, with a strong, freezing wind. According to Mrs. Burton, the window had been open for at least 45 minutes, which would have drastically lowered the room's temperature. The comfortable warmth proved that the window had only just been opened. Therefore, Detective Sleuth immediately knew Mrs. Burton was lying.
