💼 Poor Mary got a hit in her head... but wait though 💼

📕Story Background

The Grand Exhibition Hall was preparing for its prestigious jewelry showcase. Miss Mary, one of the organizers, was assigned to escort a rising jewelry designer — Miss Lina — and settle her into the VIP suite on the third floor.

Mary took the suitcase full of Lina’s exhibit jewels and placed it carefully on the bedside table.

“Is there anything else you need?” she asked politely.

“Just a glass of warm milk tomorrow morning, please,” Lina replied with a smile.

The next morning, Lina had just finished brushing her teeth and was washing her face when she suddenly heard a terrified scream followed by a heavy thud outside her room. She rushed to the door — Mary was lying on the floor, blood streaming from her forehead, nothing and no one elso to be found.

Panicked, Lina ran to grab a towel to stop the bleeding, but when she turned back toward the bed, her heart sank — the suitcase of jewels was gone. “Oh my God!” she cried, and immediately called the police.

When Chief Fall arrived, Lina tearfully recounted what happened. Mary, holding her head, added:

“I brought Miss Lina her hot milk. Just as I stepped inside, I felt a strong gust of wind behind me. The moment I turned around, something hard hit me on the head, and I fainted. I vaguely saw a masked man running away with Miss Lina’s suitcase.”

Fall glanced at the bedside table, only a cup of milk sat on a tray.

“Is it still warm?” he said to Lina. “Why not drink it?”

“I… I can’t right now,” Lina stammered, eyes filled with tears.

Mary then reached out and touched the cup. “No, it’s gone cold. I’ll go heat it up again,” she said, lifting the tray to leave.

But Chief Fall stopped her. “No need, Miss Mary. Before you reheat it — tell me where the suitcase is.”

Why did Chief Fall suspect that Mary was the culprit? Any crucial clue or deduction?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

Correct Answer: The match should not burn

Chief Goss realized that in such a violent storm, it was impossible to light a match outdoors, let alone long enough to observe details like knife wounds or blood. The man’s story was fabricated — he could only have known those details if he had killed the victim himself before the rain began.
