⚾ It is about... the simple reality of time ⚾

📕Story Background

It’s a packed house at the Mudville Stadium. The local minor league baseball team, the Mudville Monsters, are tied in a tense game against their rivals.

The team's beloved mascot is "Muddy," a giant, furry swamp monster. During the famous 7th Inning Stretch—a brief break in the game where the crowd stands up and the stadium plays the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"—Muddy’s giant furry head was stolen from the locker room!

The song lasts exactly two minutes. When the music ended, the head was gone, and the team was left mascot-less.

You, the stadium's head of security, immediately gather the four people who had locker room access during that two-minute window. Here are their testimonies:

Candy (The Snack Vendor): "I was stuck in the stands up in Section 104. Just as the music started playing, a little kid accidentally knocked over his giant soda, and it spilled all over my sneakers. I spent the whole stretch wiping my shoes with napkins."

Pitcher Pete (The Star Athlete): "I was down in the bullpen warming up my arm. I was so deeply in the zone and focused on my rhythm that I threw exactly 50 practice pitches, back-to-back, right into the catcher's mitt during the stretch. I never left the mound."

Coach Carter (The Manager): "I was standing on the top step of the dugout. I was furious about a strike call from the previous inning, so I spent the entire stretch glaring at the umpire across the field. I didn't take my eyes off him."

Danny (The Mascot Trainee): "I was wearing the backup mascot costume—a giant, bouncy inflatable hot dog. I was out on the grass near third base doing jumping jacks for the fans. Honestly, you can't even fit through the locker room doors in this hot dog suit unless you completely deflate it, which takes at least ten minutes!"

Do you know who is lying about how they spent those two minutes?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

----- Previous answer (The Fraunhofer Deception) -------

Correct Answer: Finch (The Night Watchman)

The Deduction Logic: The solution lies in the physics of Monochromatic Light.

  1. The Environment: The story establishes that the yard is lit only by Low-Pressure Sodium lamps. This light source emits a narrow bandwidth of pure yellow light.
  2. The Corroboration: Kael confirms the physics: He explicitly complains that he couldn't tell the "green wire from the red wire" because they both looked black/dark.
  3. Silas confirms the physics: He notes that copper (an orange/reddish metal) looked "dull gray."
  4. The Lie: Finch claims he saw the thief wearing a "Bright Red hoodie" that "stood out" against the yellow containers. *

Thus, Finch is lying. He could not have seen the color red. He likely knew the thief (perhaps his partner) and slipped up by describing the hoodie he knew the thief was wearing, forgetting that he shouldn't have been able to see that color in the yard.
