📻 Record the moment, capture the scene... accidents included 📻

📕Story Background

It was a humid July evening when Monica was found deceased in the study of her villa. Nothing in the room appeared disturbed, but on the desk, the police discovered an important object: a voice recorder, still warm to the touch.

After forensic technicians extracted the audio, they found a 90-minute recording, almost exactly the amount of free storage left on the device. This very possibly suggested that: The recorder was deliberately activated ahead of an important meeting or something, not out of panic during an emergency. After that, she never touched it again, meaning the attack came suddenly before she could stop the recording.

The recording began with half an hour of silence, then a faint conversation. Monica’s voice could be heard speaking to an unidentified man, likely discussing a transaction arranged to occur that evening. At the 46-minute mark, a sudden scream echoed through the study. This was followed by the sound of something, perhaps furniture or objects being moved. After that, only silence… until the storage was filled up and the device shuted off automatically.

Based on the conversation, police quickly located Micks, a manager Monica had dealings with. Since he had no substantial alibi and was mentioned indirectly in the recording, he was detained pending further investigation, though he claimed no presence at the scene during the time. But the crime scene offered no reliable physical evidence: no fingerprints, no weapon, no forced entry. The entire case seemed to rely solely on an ambiguous recording… until something unexpected happened.

As the investigating officers were about to pack up for the night, the cuckoo clock on Monica’s desk chimed. The sound was crisp and birdlike. The police captain glanced at his wristwatch. 7:00 PM exactly. And in that instant, just as he was about to announce the end of the day’s investigation, the captain froze, eyes widening. He had a new deduction for this case. Micks may actually be innocent and was framed by the true culprit.

What did the captain suddenly realize?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

🔍Known Clues

  1. The recorder nowadays is very capable, you know, no sounds and movements can escape its capture.
  2. Quite a long recording, isn't it?

Correct Answer: Drawer was found closed

First of all, Carlo did not have a firearms permit, which means the pistol could not have legally belonged to him.

Kowitzer, on the other hand, was a licensed private detective, and his handgun was officially registered. This alone made him a natural suspect.

Second, Kowitzer insisted from the start that he “hadn’t touched anything except the phone,” and claimed that Carlo, in a fit of rage, yanked open the drawer, grabbed the pistol, and immediately fired at him.

But even the calmest, most meticulous person—especially in a moment of anger and panic—would never pull a gun from a drawer and then take the time to neatly close that drawer before firing.

This contradiction, combined with basic deductive reasoning, made it clear:

Kowitzer was lying, and he was the one with the strongest motive and opportunity to kill Carlo.
