🔫 People tend to handle things differently when in a rage, not really in order 🔫

📕Story Background

Detective Danier had just stepped into the office of the deceased, Carlo, when Kowitzer rushed toward him.

“Other than making that damn phone call, I haven’t touched a single thing in here,” Kowitzer said nervously. “The moment it happened, I dialed you immediately.”

Danier and Kowitzer knew each other well—Kowitzer worked as a private investigator and had crossed paths with the detective many times.

Carlo’s body lay sprawled on the carpet behind his desk. To his right, just beside his limp hand, lay a French-made pistol.

Danier knelt down.

 “What exactly happened here?”

Kowitzer took a breath and began his story.

“I don’t even know why he called me here. The moment I arrived, he started shouting, accusing me of having an affair with his wife. I told him he had completely misunderstood, but he wasn’t listening. He went into a rage and screamed: ‘I’ll kill you!’ Then he yanked open a drawer, grabbed a pistol, and fired at me. Thankfully, he missed it. In that split second, I had no choice but to defend myself. It was pure self-defense.”

Danier silently slid a pencil into the barrel of the pistol and lifted it without disturbing prints. Then, with the same pencil, he carefully pulled the closed drawer out and placed the weapon back into it, where the weapon supposedly came from.

A moment later, he noticed a spent French-caliber bullet embedded in the wall opposite Carlo’s desk—the shot Kowitzer claimed had been fired at him.

Lab results soon confirmed the fingerprints on the pistol belonged to Carlo. He had no firearms permit, so the pistol’s ownership couldn’t be traced.

Danier turned to Kowitzer and said coldly:

“Stop pretending. Tell the truth.”

Because he had already solved the case.

What made Danier suspect Kowitzer immediately? Any crucial clue for that?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

Correct Answer: Oil cannot worsen an oil fire

The density of water is higher than that of oil. If oil catches fire, pouring water on it will not extinguish the flames — in fact, it will make the fire spread even faster. The correct way to handle an oil fire is to cover the pot with a lid to cut off oxygen, one of the three elements of combustion. Another method is to quickly pour something lighter than oil on top, creating a barrier that deprives the burning oil of oxygen. Oil itself can actually serve this purpose.

Therefore, Delia’s claim — that the entire kitchen ignited because she “accidentally poured oil onto the burning pan” — makes no sense. Oil would suppress an oil fire, not intensify it. Her explanation is scientifically impossible, so she was clearly lying.

Detectives concluded that Delia was very likely the arsonist.
