💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? With so many new legendary skills already out and more on the horizon, it can become difficult to know which skills to prioritize with limited funds. In this article, we’ll take a look at the newest skill that just graced the game, Thorn Armor, what it does, its role in the meta, and whether it's worth purchasing.

💠Thorn Armor

Thorn Armor is a new legendary defensive aura that grants all allies Thorn Aegis at the start of battle, reducing Physical Damage received by 6% at level 1 and up to 20% at max level. Its unique effect activates whenever a target gains Counterattack, granting Spiked Armor that reflects 6% to 20% of incoming damage back to the attacker before damage calculations occur. The skill can only be equipped on Defense Immortals, making it a natural fit for tank-heavy compositions and potentially pushing double-tank teams further into the meta. Its value is heavily tied to Great Tengu, whose Unbreakable Pact grants Counterattack to front-row allies and allows Thorn Armor's reflection effect to activate consistently. Without Tengu, Thorn Armor functions primarily as a teamwide physical damage reduction aura, which is the physical damage counterpart to Master’s Aegis. An important part of Thorn Armor is that it’s not an aura. For Tengu users, however, the combination of damage reduction, damage reflection, and Counterattack synergy makes Thorn Armor one of the more interesting defensive skills added in recent patches.

💠Damage Reduction

To evaluate the damage reduction portion of Thorn Armor, it makes the most sense to focus on Physical Damage teams, as the skill provides no protection against magical carries like Loki. In one representative battle, two nearly identical teams featuring Anubis, Nine Tails, and Medusa faced off, with the primary differences being Alexander on one side versus Ares with Thorn Armor on the other. Despite the Ares team benefiting from Thorn Armor's Physical Damage reduction, the battle lasted nearly a full minute and the team without Thorn Armor actually dealt more damage. Medusa and Alexander combined for 88.5 million damage, compared to 71 million damage from Medusa and Ares on the Thorn Armor team. While battle outcomes can be influenced by factors such as skill activations, critical hits, and targeting patterns, this result was not an isolated case. Across multiple battle reports, Thorn Armor consistently failed to produce the dramatic swing against Physical Damage teams that many players expected. The skill certainly adds survivability, but current testing suggests its impact is more modest than game-changing.

💠Counter Attack and Spiked Armor

In practice, Thorn Armor's main value comes from its Physical Damage reduction rather than its damage reflection. While the skill appears to have strong synergy with Great Tengu, whose Counterattack buff is required to activate Spiked Armor, the reflected damage is surprisingly low even in ideal conditions. Numerous battle reports reinforce this idea. In one test battle lasting 1 minute and 21 seconds with a maxed Thorn Armor and Great Tengu composition, Tengu's Counterattack effect from Unbreakable Pact dealt only 1.7 million damage, while Thorn Armor contributed just 1.5 million damage. Combined, the two reflection-based effects accounted for slightly more than 3 million damage over the entire fight, which is insignificant compared to the total damage output of modern teams. Even if that reflected damage is viewed as damage prevented in addition to damage dealt, the resulting 6 million damage swing is still relatively minor in a battle of that length. As a result, Thorn Armor should be viewed primarily as a defensive aura that extends fights through Physical Damage reduction, while its reflection component serves as little more than a small bonus rather than a meaningful win condition.

💠Verdict

Verdict: For players who might be wary of what they are spending on, Thorn Armor is certainly NOT a must buy, especially since many are still running mage-centric teams.

💠Summary

Thorn Armor is a solid defensive skill, but it falls well short of being a must-buy Legendary Skill. The damage reflection component is largely negligible even when paired with Great Tengu, and testing suggests the Physical Damage reduction alone is not enough to dramatically swing matchups against Physical Damage teams. With mage-centric teams featuring Loki and other magical carries still dominating much of the meta, many players will see limited value from a skill that only reduces Physical Damage. Unless you are heavily invested in Tengu-based Counterattack compositions or specifically looking to strengthen a tank-focused team, your resources are likely better spent elsewhere.
