💼 Mary, forget the lump in your head, just tell us the truth, would ya? 💼

📕Story Background
At 1:00 p.m., two patrolling officers heard someone shouting for help from a nearby alleyway. They rushed to the scene and found a woman sitting on the ground, clutching the back of her head where a lump was forming. It took her a minute or two before she could speak.
She introduced herself as Mary Ramsey, a clerk at a local jewelry store. “I was on my way to the bank to deliver yesterday’s receipts,” she explained. “I do this every day. My boss specifically told me not to take this alley, but today I had the feeling someone was following me. I was foolish and turned into the alley anyway. I heard footsteps behind me, and before I could look, I was hit on the head and fell.”
Mary continued, “The mugger didn’t hit me again. He grabbed my bag and ran off.”
“Can you describe him?” the officers asked.
“I only saw him from behind. He was tall, wearing blue jeans and a dark button-up sweatshirt.”
Based on this description, the police quickly launched a citywide search and soon detained two suspects matching her account:
- Stu Logan, a deli worker, was found two blocks from the scene. He tried to flee when he saw the patrol car. “Yes, I was running,” he snapped, “but only because my lunch break was almost over and I didn’t want to be late for work. I can’t afford to lose this job!” Stu worked right next to the jewelry store.
- Ollie Oscar, a known street scavenger, was found wearing a moth-eaten button-up sweatshirt. “I wasn’t wearing this earlier,” he insisted. “I just picked it up from a dumpster before you caught me.”
The officers found a bank deposit pouch on Ollie. “What about this?” they asked.
“Oh, that? I pulled it from a different trash bin. The one behind the bank always has these. You didn’t find any money in it, did you?”
At that moment, something in Ollie’s story clicked in the officers’ minds. They quickly drove back to the alley and confronted Mary.
“You're lying,” one of the officers declared. “You're the real suspect.”
Why did the officer say that?
(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

----- Previous answer (Last Call in Tokyo) -------
Correct Answer: She could not hear footsteps on the soft carpet.
The woman claimed she heard footsteps over the phone after the victim was attacked. But the room was carpeted with a thick Turkish camel-hair rug—so soft that footsteps made no sound. Inspector Murai, walking on it himself, confirmed this. Therefore, it was impossible for her to hear anyone escaping.
Her story was fabricated, possibly to establish an alibi or mislead the investigation. Only someone who had been in the room could have known the sequence of events, including the sound of someone fleeing—a sound that never occurred.
