For our final match in the regular season, we had done extraordinarily well. We were going to go into the match 5-0. We had been ducking and dodging since match 4 like we were in the witness protection program lol. It had paid off for us. Eventually, however, luck does run out, and we were no exception. No matter what happened we had guaranteed ourselves a playoff spot. We were fighting for a good playoff spot. One where we wouldn’t get knocked out in the first round. Instead of a blessing the Old Gods gave us whales lol. We would fight BDR in the second time slot at ungodly o’clock in the morning (Seriously, the match was like 3 am my time lol).

The only good thing about this match was it was as bad of a time for them as it was us lol. Even still I don’t think any of us really thought we would beat them. Shorthanded as they were this match, didn’t really matter.

They easily have stronger overall accounts. I think it has become abundantly clear that NBe tends to rule the Siege of Winterfell Streets, both regular season and playoffs. BDR and Rod will generally place 2nd and third. The real fight is for the rest of us. The ones not guaranteed a playoff spot, with no aspirations of taking first. We have to strategize, and plan matches knowing one well placed loss could end it all.

Our matches until then had been good, and despite the odds I planned on giving everything I could like the rest of my scrappy alliance. We were in good spirits despite the lack of sleep. Ready to face our inevitable loss. I was glancing around the map to see where I would end up. There was not much strategizing I could do. BDR has a deep roster and could stick a couple whales on each building and still have enough to take both dragons and lock us in our base lmao. Even still I had to pick a side and it was looking like the Armory Side would be as good of a place as any. Joining the big fight would be smart, but what if I could push up to their base and draw a crowd as I tend to do…

As I made my way up the map, I prayed that I could last a little bit and not be instantly melted. All this travel just to die in a second was not on my bingo card on this day. Some others had a similar idea and were there already fighting when I arrived.  I said a quick prayer and jumped into the madness. I can’t say we were winning the battle,  but we were drawing quite a few away from the big fights. The battles were brutal. Fire from the dragons making it even hotter.

I was dying, but lasting longer than I thought I would. Definitely doing some damage…

I was taking damage too. At this point it would have been easy to just give up. But having the player advantage and a score that was closer than we could have imagined kept us in the game. We were focused on trying to get as many points as possible, and with a score this close some of us dared to even dream of winning.

I was tired but I was focused. Glancing around the map every time I reset to see where I was needed most. Sometimes it was one of the smaller territories, sometimes it was the Armory itself. The nearness of the score made it a pretty fun match and kept us engaged. The epic battle reports too big to even share were piling up.

This was another match where the fighting raged on till the last seconds. For a match that was a forgone conclusion before it even started, we had scored a decent amount of points and kept it closer than it should have been. To be fair, I am sure BDR did not go all out in this match. Probably just doing enough to win but saving speeds for the playoff matches that would matter. Although I hope our efforts in the fight made them work a little harder than what they intended due to our scrapy shenanigans.

Having done better than our wildest imaginations against an incredibly strong top 3 or 4 team, and securing our playoff spot we allowed ourselves a moment to celebrate a fun anniversary laden season. The special chaos in the matches with the new mechanics breathed new life into one of my favorite events. Ahead of us lie the playoffs, where we should get one doable match before meeting another whale alliance. The lesson of this match was never give up, you can find fun in places you never thought you could. When you give up before you even start, you never get to see how high you could have flown. Sometimes, like in this match, it is higher than you thought possible.  Now if you fine folks will excuse me, I need to prepare for the playoffs…. See yall Match 2, I hope lol.
