With 2 wins and 1 loss already on the scoreboard, N0X came into Match 4 with a very clear mission: we needed two more victories to keep our Playoff hopes alive. Realistically, we could afford one last loss near the end of the season, when we’d inevitably run into a top alliance, but tonight was not that match. Tonight was the one we had to win!

Our opponent is UTB. A familiar name from past seasons. Not a powerhouse, but far from a pushover. A dangerous middleweight that could swing either way depending on who showed up. If we wanted our dreams to stay alive, we had to take them seriously. That meant participation would be everything. Numbers, healing, persistence... if we had those, we could grind out a win.

But as I checked Discord before the game, I noticed something odd. No hype? No last minute battle plans? Just some attendance polls and a few routine messages. Was leadership calm because they were confident? Did they know something I didn’t? Or… was it the opposite... that this match wasn’t getting the attention it deserved? I wasn’t sure, and the silence made me curious.

I logged in early, not wanting to miss the game and have time to go through the assignments and any plans at my own pace. Maybe I was overthinking... maybe it would all line up once the timer hit zero and we started the match.

The match began! Almost immediately, my fears turned into reality: participation was… less than ideal. Both sides were missing some players, but UTB still brough 11 extra accounts. That’s roughly 15% more troops on the field, and in SoW, that margin feels huge. Not a great start for our heroes in N0X😳

Assignments had me placed at Hot Springs. Again... At this point it’s practically muscle memory: 7 out of my last 8 games were here. Still, I knew the drill, and I charged in with the rest of our team. But it was clear from the opening sprint that we weren’t going to hold it. UTB had more numbers, more force deployed there. Within minutes, Hot Springs was lost for us, and to make matters worse, I saw that they were already hitting our Stronghold at the same time.

The alarm bells were ringing early and we had to react.

And while we were struggling at Hot Springs, the same story was unfolding across the map at Armory. UTB came in confident, and with their extra numbers, they had every right to be. At least there we managed to hold them off at Armory, instead of falling back to the Stronghold.

But on our side, the early pressure was so strong that we even lost our Stronghold for a few minutes. That’s the kind of thing that makes your stomach drop. Losing your foothold on the map so early usually signals the start of a collapse. At least we didn't give up, reinforcements came back from base and we fought back. Soon enough we were holding the Stronghold again. With the teleports now available, we could reinforce directly on top of it. For a moment, it felt like the tide was turning.🙂

Except… it wasn’t.😌Instead of the glorious stand we usually make at Hot Springs, the main brawl had shifted to our Stronghold. And that is never a good omen.

At first, we thought we had the upper hand. Every time a N0X army died at HS, it got healed up and ported in the Stronghold fight. On paper, we had the numbers. But then UTB did the same... only they did it better. Their Hot Springs victory freed up a snowball of armies, all coming straight into our Stronghold like an avalanche.

We still technically outnumbered them most of the time, but we couldn’t clear them fast enough. The fight dragged on, grinding into a war of attrition, and attrition always favors the side with more accounts. Slowly, inevitably, we were being pushed back.

And while all this was happening, the map looked worse and worse. We still had Armory, yes, but Hot Springs was gone, and without that healing buff, our morale was dying and out optimism was slipping away.

My marches died for the third time, and this time I had no fresh troops left to send in. I was forced to start healing the "expensive" way, without HS on our side. That’s when the creeping doubt set in: this wasn’t just a temporary setback. This could very well be the beginning of the end for N0X.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. My teleport was still on cooldown, so I decided to march instead, saving the port for later. But just as my troops set out, I noticed something chilling: we were already 13 minutes in, and the first statue had spawned.

Of course, it was on their side. More buffs for UTB. Perfect😒To make matters worse, we were still being pushed back, which meant they grabbed the first package too. We could harass and delay it, but contesting it was out of the question.

Still, we weren’t ready to roll over. There was fire in the team, a genuine push to flip the game around. We came out swinging and reclaimed the Stronghold, then started mopping up their remaining marches. For the first time, the map looked like it might stabilize. On paper, it felt promising: clear them out on our side, move up to Hot Springs and eventually take the fight to their Stronghold.

But that was the paper version. Execution was a totally different story.

Despite outnumbering them in the fight, UTB’s marches just wouldn’t die. Clearing them took forever. Every time we thought we’d created some breathing room, more reinforcements appeared. It was like trying to push water out of a sinking ship. This game had been fought on their terms from the very start, and it was beginning to show.

Then came the second statue, this time on our side. Finally, a chance to get some buffs for ourselves.

We rushed to get it, sending more than enough troops to make sure no contest was possible. And we did secure it. The bags were ours, the buffs were ours.

But we had overcommitted😱

Too many of our forces were sitting idle at the statue, waiting for bags, while the real battle raged elsewhere. In that meantime, UTB struck. We’d only just reclaimed the Stronghold, but spread too thin across the statue, Hot Springs, the Outpost, and the Stronghold itself, we couldn’t hold anything.

So my assignment, the Stronghold fell, again😭

And with it, so did that fragile sense of momentum we’d just started to build.

It seems this is actually their plan. UTB wants to keep us busy reacting to fights on our side of the map while they secure more buildings, get more points per minute, and run packages uncontested. Twenty minutes in and we still haven’t managed to break free of this loop. We’re stuck playing their game.

At best, all we can do is defend our buildings so we don’t get steamrolled. But this means our half of the map is constantly “blinking”, buildings being flipped back and forth, while theirs stays stable. And that translates directly into points. Even when we tie them for a while, the moment we lose a building or delay a flip, the scoreboard tilts slightly in their favor. Slowly but surely, the gap begins to show.

Close to half-time we realize the hard truth: if we don’t change our approach, this game is over. Playing by UTB’s rules, only reacting, never dictating, will only dig the hole deeper. There’s still time to catch up, but only if we change the strategy right now.

The timing feels perfect. Statues are spawning, and the package has just dropped. They got to it first, but if, and that’s a big if, we can steal the package, deliver it, secure at least our side’s statue to keep the buffs balanced, and hold the Stronghold I’ve been bleeding over since the start… then maybe, just maybe, we can get back in this fight. But if even one of those ifs doesn’t happen, this match is gone.

UTB seems to sense this too. They push to contest our statue, but we finally overpower them. While we can’t pick up all the bags, at least we get in the five minute buff and keep the long term stat advantage from spiraling completely out of control. Step one of the comeback is done.

The sad part? We fail the most important “if.” We can’t contest the package, and just like that, it’s gone. Morale dips as the scoreboard tilts further in their favor. Still, we force ourselves to stay optimistic. We throw everything into securing map control, determined to... at least get the next package. And just as the mood threatens to sink, we finally manage to take back Hot Springs, cheap healing at last, and with it, a faint glimmer of hope.

At least we got another five minute statue buff and the bags, small victories in a game that feels like it’s slipping away.

Once again, we try to push from bottom to top, crossing the midpoint and aiming to finally fight at their Strongholds instead of always bleeding at ours.

On paper, again, it should work. Most of their marches don’t even feel that strong, unless I bump into one of ImMoRTaL’s armies, and then I get flattened. But aside from that😅, the skirmishes lean our way.

Still, we stick to the plan. For now, we’ve got the statue, we’ve secured our side of the map, and this time we’re delivering the package. I port back to my assigned post and keep grinding it out.

It would have been amazing to have had some previous deliveries as the 10k point gap is still hanging over our heads, but I tell myself it’s recoverable. And I really believe it is.

And finally, after 40 long minutes of reacting, defending, and a constant back and forward game, we finally make our own play. We deliver a package while holding solid map control. For the first time all match, you can almost feel the energy surge, the hype, the excitement, as that package crosses the threshold at the Stronghold I’ve been bleeding over since the very start.

Are things starting to come back for us? I sure hope so! There’s a small bump in morale, just enough to keep everyone committed until the end. We can still turn this around!

With nearly all of their troops tied up at our Strongholds, UTB leaves other objectives lightly defended. We even manage to snatch Hot Springs for another cheap heal, just the boost my overflowing hospital needed.

The score stabilizes a little. We’re still 10k behind, but at least we’re not sliding further back. For the first time, it feels like the game isn’t completely slipping away. Now, it’s time to take the fight to them. In what seems like a desperate last minute strategy, we’re sent north to their Stronghold.

I have my doubts. We’re moving scattered, not as a coordinated force. This feels like walking into a meat grinder, one sausage at a time. Still, I follow orders, sometimes these calls make no sense at the time, but occasionally, a Hail Mary like this wins the game. Maybe this is one of those times.

Alas, it’s not😭My troops are slaughtered almost immediately. We're forced to fall back, bleeding once again at the Stronghold that’s been my battlefield all match. And with only five minutes left on the clock, our fate is sealed. “Stop healing” is called. The game is officially lost.

At this point I can’t help but wonder what went wrong. We went in with high hopes, knowing it would be a tough match, but also confident that if we played our game like we usually do, we could win🙌

One thing that stands out now, looking at the overall score, is something counterintuitive: we were killing them all game long, literally! The elimination charts are dominated by N0X players, yet UTB still had map control. How does that even happen? Do they have more fingers? Did they smash their keyboards harder? Probably not. What I do know is that they had more accounts up on the map, and almost certainly more main players, while we also brought in alts to fill gaps in our roster.

Whatever the case, the loss is on the record. Leadership will have their analysis, and I hope they can find out what went wrong better than I can. As the curtain falls, the rewards are bleak, a fitting reflection of the match’s outcome.

After match 4, N0X stands at 2/4 wins, a precarious spot at this stage of the season. This was a match we should have won. With only two games left, I can’t honestly say I’m optimistic that we can win both. The playoffs now feel like a steeper climb than I hoped.

Looking at my personal ratings, I’m frustrated, almost mad. Despite being active and fighting the entire match, my elimination points and healing points don’t reflect that effort. I can already picture management asking why my numbers are low, only for me to say I healed everything that died. My best guess is around weak mid spender commanders and T4 troops holding me back, plus healing points being lower simply because T4s are cheaper to heal than T5s.

But hope isn’t gone. My T5 lineups are just around the corner, with Sararer and Daena set to dramatically improve my strength. Soon, I’ll be able to test my strategies under far better circumstances. For now, all I can do is reflect, learn, and be patient, because the next game is another chance to prove ourselves.
