🐱 You may lie without flinching, but cats and cars are honest 🐱

📕Story Background

On a cold winter night, a mix of rain and snow fell over the city. Around the same time, a serious hit-and-run accident occurred on the outskirts: a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, and the driver fled the scene. About 30 minutes later, the suspect arrived home and parked his car in the garage. Despite the quick escape, an eyewitness had managed to note down the car’s license plate number.

An hour later, a patrol officer arrived at the suspect’s home, inspecting the car in the garage while questioning the man for an alibi.

"As you can see, officer, my car has been parked in the garage since yesterday. I haven’t driven it today at all. The witness must have misread the plate number."

But as the officer examined the vehicle, he noticed something interesting—there were several cat paw prints and faint marks of a cat having curled up on the hood of the car.

“Do you have a cat?”
“No, probably just a neighbor’s or a stray cat. They often sneak into the yard and play on the car.”

The officer then shook his head.

“In that case, you're lying. You may lie without flinching, but cats and cars are honest.”

The officer had uncovered the truth. But how?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

🔍Known Clues

  1. It was raining and snowing earlier that winter night, freezing cold outside.
  2. The hood of the car had visible cat paw prints and a spot where a cat had curled up.
  3. The suspect claimed the car hadn’t moved at all that day.

🕵️‍Questions and Discussions for YOU

  1. HOW did the officer uncover the truth? WHAT would be the most crucial and possible clue to the conclusion?
  2. Have you ever had the experience of driving in the snow? How did it feel?. (Open-ended)

----- Previous answer (Through the Glass, Sleight of Hand) -------

Correct Answer: It was the only watch still ticking after three days.

The watch the thief handled stood out from all the others in the display case for one simple reason: it was still ticking.

All the other watches, even if they had been wound before the holiday, would have stopped by now — the jewelry store had been closed for three full days. A mechanical watch typically doesn’t run that long without rewinding. Therefore, the only watch still running had to be the one the thief had just touched and fiddled.

Obviously, Officer Verney managed to identify the one watch at the scene without even taking too much time. So the most crucial clue for him to QUICKLY locate the exact watch among the others, was the ticking pointer of the one watch. The fingerprint surely is a good clue, but first you have to actually find the one with it.
