⌚ You may have the sleight of hand, but you cannot escape from a sharp head ⌚

📕Story Background

A small jewelry shop had been closed for three days while all the staff took advantage of the break to visit family. On the morning of the fourth day, as the store reopened, a well-dressed man stepped in and asked to see some watches from the glass cabinet, first guest of the day.

The store owner, Mr. Church, walked over from the counter and opened the display case for him. The man picked up a watch, fiddled with it, asked the price, then said he needed to think about it and calmly left the store.

Only moments after the man’s departure, Mr. Church noticed something odd: a luxurious pearl necklace placed near the cabinet’s door was missing. Stunned, he quickly instructed the staff to lock the doors and called the police.

Within five minutes, Officer Verney arrived. Mr. Church met him at the door and said, “I’m sure the thief is a known professional, you wouldn’t believe how smooth he was. I didn’t even notice him take anything.”

Officer Verney asked, “What did he look like?”

Mr. Church replied, “Fairly average. Tall, wearing brown-tinted glasses, well-dressed. But his face… I didn’t catch much of it.”

Verney nodded. “If he’s a known thief, we might have his fingerprints on file. Any chance he left any behind here?”

Mr. Church shook his head. “I doubt it. I saw him put on gloves right after he handled the watch.”

Verney raised an eyebrow. “Then there’s your clue. Which watch did he handle?”

“That’s the thing, there are over a hundred watches in that case. All our customers touch them. There are fingerprints everywhere.”

Verney smiled. “Not quite. There’s one watch that stands out.”

He reached in with tweezers and plucked out a specific watch.

“This is the one.”

Sure enough, Verney retrieved a clear fingerprint from that watch. A quick match to police records later, and the thief was apprehended.

How did Officer Verney manage to find the exact watch? Any clue?

(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

🔍Known Clues

  1. The store had been closed for three full days before the man entered, every product was wiped clean and tidy.
  2. The first customer to touch anything since the closure would leave the only fresh prints on one item.
  3. They don't sell electronic watches here, old fashioned.

----- Previous answer (Death on the Fourth Day) -------

Correct Answer: The bees gathered honey from toxic flowers

The detective realized the honey was unintentionally poisoned—not by Tracy, but by nature. Bees often collect nectar from local flowers. At that time of year, only toxic blooms such as Gelsemium (heartbreak grass) and drunken fish plant were flowering. Their nectar is lethal to humans when concentrated in honey. Tracy was innocent—Paul’s death was a tragic accident of timing and nature.
