💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome back to my Illusion Battlefield League (IBL) series, where I take a closer look at different matches. The IBL tournament differs from regular IB in that everyone constructs marches and skill builds using a fixed set of available skills. At different stages of the tournament, more Immortals and skills become available, but every player has access to the same options. Castle skins and Lord Talents do not affect the faster-paced battles of IBL, while relocation and marching speeds are also increased. The event is one of the most entertaining in Infinity Kingdom, with players often spectating matches almost like a sporting event. In this article, I’m going to take a closer look at the matchup between Server 16’s More than Gamers (NG+) and Server 73’s Snugglebunnies (BUNS).

💠Overview

BUNS entered the matchup after playing only three games during the Points Phase and winning all three before defeating OF and SJ in the first two rounds of the playoffs. NG+ finished the first phase at 6–1, with their only loss coming against BTE in a matchup they would have been expected to win as the more experienced team, before defeating EP and W2F to reach the Gold Bracket finals. Both teams have dealt with inconsistent attendance throughout the tournament, making turnout especially important in this matchup. With the teams relatively competitive in experience and performance, whichever alliance could better convert its available players into effective map control should have a significant advantage.

💠Starting Positions and Talents

NG+

  • Started with 21 players and ended with 28
  • 8 Attack talents
  • 9 Defense talents
  • 4 Support talents

BUNS

  • Started with 17 players and ended with 18
  • 10 Attack talents
  • 5 Defense talents
  • 2 Support talents

NG+ started with four more players and eventually finished with ten more, giving them a major attendance advantage on paper. Their talent distribution was also more defensive, while BUNS leaned more heavily toward Attack. However, attendance only matters if those players are actually able to stay on the field and reinforce effectively. If BUNS could repeatedly block relocations and force NG+ players back into spawn, they could reduce that numerical disadvantage without ever needing to match NG+ player for player.

💠Tower 1

NG+ sent four players to Tower 1, while BUNS committed six. One NG+ player attempted to relocate onto BUNS’ side of the tower, where the relocation was almost guaranteed to be destroyed, potentially wasting roughly seven crucial minutes at the start of the match. The more NG+ players BUNS could force back into spawn, the easier it became for BUNS to neutralize the overall attendance disadvantage on the field. If NG+ was only going to commit four players to Tower 1, they could have conceded the objective entirely. However, with several favorable edge spawns for Tower 1, the better strategy would have been to concede Tower 4 instead and overload both Tower 1 and the Central Tower, where their positioning and greater attendance could have created stronger local advantages.

💠Tower 4

NG+ sent six players to Tower 4, while BUNS committed only four. However, BUNS had two favorable edge spawns that could have been used aggressively to contest key relocation spots. If executed properly, BUNS could block one or two of NG+’s relocations, reducing or potentially eliminating the initial numbers disadvantage before the battle even began. This made Tower 4 much more dangerous for NG+ than the raw player count suggested. A six-versus-four advantage is only useful if all six players actually complete their relocations and establish position around the objective.

💠Central Tower

NG+ sent seven players to the Central Tower, while BUNS committed only five, giving NG+ an immediate numbers advantage at the most important opening objective. Against a larger opponent like NG+, BUNS could have considered conceding one of the side towers entirely and concentrating more of their limited forces in the center. Spreading themselves across all three objectives left BUNS undermanned at the Central Tower, where losing control could quickly put them on the back foot. Their best path was therefore to survive long enough for reinforcements from the side towers to arrive while preventing NG+ from converting its initial numbers advantage into an early capture.

💠Altars

Neither team sent anyone to either altar, showing that both sides prioritized early tower control rather than spreading players across lower-value objectives. Given the importance of the Central Tower and the two side objectives during the opening phase, this was a reasonable decision for both teams.

💠Home Towers

Both teams stationed two guards at their home tower. That provided more protection than a single defender, but neither tower was truly safe once the opposing team began committing multiple players and reinforcing the area.

💠Play-by-Play

At Tower 1, BUNS did not have enough time to destroy the aggressive NG+ relocation, but they immediately focused their attacks on the player and quickly zeroed him. BUNS then began sieging the tower while eliminating another NG+ member. Two additional NG+ players attempted to relocate back to the objective, but with the battle already slipping away, they would have been better off abandoning Tower 1 and reinforcing the Central Tower instead. BUNS allowed one relocation to complete before eliminating all three remaining defenders and capturing the tower at the five-minute mark, giving them an early advantage. More importantly, NG+ continued committing players to an objective that had already become extremely difficult to recover, wasting time that could have been spent stabilizing the center.

At Tower 4, BUNS destroyed three incoming relocations, immediately neutralizing NG+’s initial numbers advantage. With the four remaining NG+ players positioned far from the objective, BUNS captured the tower with relative ease just six minutes into the match. NG+ repeatedly attempted to relocate back into the area, but BUNS blocked several relocations, repositioned behind NG+’s formation, and repeatedly eliminated incoming players before they could establish a foothold. This was arguably the most important sequence of the match. BUNS turned a four-versus-six disadvantage into effective local control by denying NG+ access to the battlefield entirely. Every destroyed relocation removed another player from active combat for several minutes, allowing BUNS to create temporary numerical advantages despite having far fewer players overall. NG+ eventually managed to zero one BUNS player, but BUNS continued eliminating the remaining attackers and maintained firm control of the objective.

In the center, BUNS immediately combined rallies with solo attacks and zeroed three NG+ players in quick succession before NG+ could deal any significant damage in return. Reinforcements from Tower 1 soon arrived, allowing BUNS to surround the Central Tower and eliminate the remaining enemies closest to the objective. With NG+ unable to withstand the pressure or establish any meaningful control of the area, BUNS captured the crucial Central Tower at the 13-minute mark and completely overwhelmed NG+ in the opening battle. The result at the Central Tower showed how quickly BUNS converted success on the side objectives into map-wide momentum. Once Tower 1 was secured, those freed players immediately reinforced the center, turning NG+’s original numerical advantage there into another losing fight.

Five minutes into the match, NG+ began relocating toward BUNS’ home tower, where two guards were defending. The invaders spent a significant amount of time in the area but struggled to advance or deal meaningful damage to either defender. After NG+ lost both outer towers and the Central Tower, they committed even more players to Tower 2 in an attempt to create an opening, but BUNS refused to yield. At the same time, two BUNS players teleported to NG+’s home tower, which was also defended by two guards. BUNS zeroed two players, forced another to shield, destroyed several incoming relocations, and eventually stole the tower at the 27-minute mark. While NG+ spent significant manpower attacking a home tower they could not capture, BUNS used a much smaller force more efficiently and converted its pressure into another objective.

💠Summary

BUNS dominated NG+ 100,000 to 14,300, with Klee earning MVP. NG+ had an extremely poor early game and completely failed to capitalize on its attendance advantage. Too many players continued returning to an already lost Tower 1, while poor relocations at Tower 4 allowed BUNS to repeatedly block or destroy incoming players and leave a significant portion of NG+ stuck in spawn for several minutes at a time. That relocation control was the defining factor of the match. Although NG+ had more players overall, BUNS repeatedly reduced the number of NG+ players actually active on the battlefield, allowing them to win fights they should have been outnumbered in on paper. BUNS also appeared to have stronger individual builds, winning the majority of solo attacks and defenses and reducing their need to rely on large numerical advantages. Their use of farm accounts provided another practical advantage by allowing them to spend recalls and marching speedups more aggressively without the same resource concerns as NG+. Combined with better relocation control and stronger individual performance, that allowed BUNS to dictate the pace of the match despite the attendance disparity. NG+ drops to the Silver Bracket, while BUNS clinches a spot in the Top 16.
