A new Chaos Immortal enters Norheim.
Patch 2.9.9 introduces Horus, a back-row magical Bowmen Immortal built around damage control, AoE pressure and Punishment. He arrives alongside the new Psychic Vortex Tower of Knowledge skill, while several progression systems receive welcome improvements from Lord Talents and building upgrades to early-season Artifacts and skill availability.
There is plenty happening here, but all eyes will be on Horus.
Introduction
Patch 2.9.9 brings another new Immortal to Norheim, and this time Infinity Kingdom goes all the way back to ancient Egypt.
Horus joins the Chaos roster as a back-row magical Bowmen Immortal. His Royal Sarcophagus skill combines a passive limit on how much HP he can lose from a single instance of damage with an active attack hitting every enemy and potentially applying Punishment, increasing the damage they receive.
His Exclusive Artifact pushes that mechanic further by increasing Punishment's application chance to 100%, while the new Psychic Vortex Tower of Knowledge skill introduces another stacking Magical Damage option.
But 2.9.9 isn't only about a new Immortal.
Several progression barriers are being moved or softened. Some Tower of Knowledge skills arrive earlier, newer players gain more Artifact resources, buildings can jump multiple levels automatically, and Lord Talents finally become easier to adjust without resetting everything.
There is also a new Alliance Charter for newer players, Immortal demonstration battles, formation copying and several smaller interface improvements.
Horus may be the face of 2.9.9, but underneath him, this patch touches progression at almost every stage of the game.
Maël's Opinion Horus is obviously where my attention goes first, but I actually find the progression changes almost as interesting. We've seen several recent patches reduce friction around older systems, and 2.9.9 continues that direction. As for Horus, I'm not calling him strong or meta before we see him fight. But a back-row Chaos Immortal that limits individual damage instances, hits the entire enemy team and can make everyone take additional damage certainly gives us enough to talk about.

1. Horus: A New Chaos Immortal
Patch 2.9.9 introduces Horus, the latest Legendary Chaos Immortal to join Norheim. Positioned in the back row, Horus is a magical Bowmen Immortal whose design combines survivability with team-wide offensive pressure.

His arrival takes a slightly different direction from simply adding another damage dealer. Horus is built around two sides of the battle: controlling how much damage he can receive at once, while making the entire enemy formation increasingly vulnerable through Punishment. His Exclusive Artifact reinforces that second role by making Punishment significantly more reliable.
Horus will be obtainable through the upcoming Pirate Festival, continuing the recent trend of connecting major Immortal releases directly to seasonal events. That also means his arrival won't simply be a new portrait appearing in the Immortal menu; he should become one of the central progression targets of the next festival.
Visually, Horus is also an interesting addition. The 2.9.9 artwork shows a mysterious winged figure sitting in the distance, and with the Egyptian god now officially confirmed for the patch, it's difficult not to wonder whether we're already looking at our first hidden glimpse of him.

2. Royal Sarcophagus: Damage, Survival and Punishment
Horus's Royal Sarcophagus is built around a passive and active effect that give him two very different roles during battle.
The passive limits the damage Horus can receive from any single instance to 19% of his Max HP at Level 1, decreasing by 2% with each skill level. Rather than reducing all incoming damage by a fixed percentage, Royal Sarcophagus places a ceiling on individual hits. Large bursts can therefore only remove a limited portion of Horus's health at once.
His active effect turns toward offense. Horus attacks all enemies simultaneously, dealing Magical Damage at a rate of 204% + 28% per level. Each target then has a 60% chance of receiving Punishment for six seconds, increasing the damage they take by 4.5% + 1.5% per level.

The Exclusive Artifact completes that mechanic by increasing the Punishment application chance to 100%. Its recommended primary attributes are Crit Rate and Magical Attack Bonus, reinforcing Horus's position as a back-row magical Immortal while making his team-wide debuff reliable rather than chance-based.

Put together, Royal Sarcophagus gives Horus a clear identity: survive heavy individual hits from the back row, strike the entire enemy formation, and temporarily open that formation to increased damage from the rest of his march.
Maël's Opinion: The passive is what catches my attention first. A cap on each individual instance of damage is very different from conventional damage reduction, and I'm curious to see how it interacts with the current burst-heavy environment. Punishment may be just as important, though. With the Exclusive Artifact bringing it to 100%, Horus isn't only amplifying his own attack—he potentially creates a six-second damage window for the entire team. How consistently that window can be exploited will probably tell us much more about Horus than his raw damage numbers alone.
3. Psychic Vortex Another Tool for Magic Teams
Horus isn't arriving alone. Patch 2.9.9 also introduces Psychic Vortex, a new Tower of Knowledge skill available through the Wish Shop during Legendary Season.
Its mechanic is based on accumulation. Whenever the equipped Immortal loses 10% HP, or whenever an Ultimate Skill is cast, Psychic Vortex increases Magical Damage by 9% + 3% per level. The effect can stack up to five times, allowing the bonus to build progressively as the battle develops.

That gives the skill two different ways to gain momentum. Taking damage can generate stacks naturally, while Ultimate Skill activation provides another trigger independent of HP loss. Once fully stacked, Psychic Vortex becomes a substantial source of Magical Damage amplification for the Immortal carrying it.
It enters the wider Tower of Knowledge pool, so its potential extends beyond the new Chaos Immortal and into other magical formations capable of making good use of its stacking mechanic.
Maël's Opinion: Psychic Vortex immediately looks interesting, but this is another one I want to see in real battles before drawing conclusions. Five stacks create an impressive ceiling on paper, but how quickly and consistently you reach them will matter much more than the maximum number itself. The obvious temptation will be testing it around Horus, especially with his unusual survivability mechanic, but I suspect the more interesting question will be which existing Magic Immortals can exploit Psychic Vortex even better.
4. Progression Opens Earlier
Beyond Horus and Psychic Vortex, Patch 2.9.9 makes several progression systems available earlier in a server’s life.
The Wish Shop receives one of the more noticeable changes. Energy Mastery moves from Conquest Season to Season 2, while Arcane Hunter, Divine Blessing and Eternal Battlelust move from Legendary Season to Conquest. These skills aren’t new, but players will now gain access to them considerably earlier in their seasonal progression.
Artifacts follow the same direction. Stellar Compass rewards will now include Artifact Schematics from any element alongside Season Exclusive Artifact Schematic Fragment Selection Chests. S0 and S1 Ancient Gold Exchange shops are also being expanded with Artifact Empowerment materials, bringing another part of Artifact development closer to newer accounts.
The new Alliance Charter targets even earlier progression. Once new players unlock the Alliance feature, they receive a five-day Alliance quest with rare item rewards. It’s a small addition, but one designed to connect new players with Alliance activity almost immediately.
Taken together, these changes don't introduce another progression system. Instead, they move existing tools closer to the beginning of the journey.
Maël’s Opinion: I find this broader trend interesting. Several recent updates have been removing old restrictions or bringing progression forward, and 2.9.9 pushes that further. Giving players earlier access to useful skills and Artifact development should make the journey through the first seasons feel less restrictive. The question is how far IK wants to take this. As more systems accumulate over the years, accelerating older progression may become increasingly necessary simply to keep the road toward Legendary manageable.
5. Quality of Life Across Norheim
The rest of Patch 2.9.9 focuses on making several everyday systems faster and easier to manage.
Building progression receives one of the most practical additions. Once your Castle reaches Level 3, eligible buildings can now be upgraded automatically by multiple levels at once, provided at least two upgrades are available and the building is Level 48 or below. Instead of repeating the same upgrade process level after level, the game can take the building directly to the corresponding available level.
Lord Talents also become much more flexible. Players can now downgrade individual talents and reset a single talent tree, removing the need for broader resets when only one part of a build needs changing.
Elsewhere, Elemental Domain formations can be copied directly from existing teams, while the Castle requirement for Alliance Spar drops from Level 15 to just Level 5. Immortal Affinity rewards can now be claimed in batches, with clearer notifications when new stories become available.
Immortal management receives two smaller additions as well. The Immortal interface can now display demonstration battles featuring recommended lineups and skill setups, while newly forged Artifacts will show where they were originally obtained. Finally, equipment selection inside the Alchemy Lab becomes easier to correct, as clicking an already-selected item will simply deselect it.
Maël's Opinion: None of these features will sell a patch, but several will save us clicks every day. The single-tree Talent reset and multi-level building upgrades are probably the standouts for me. I’m also curious about Immortal demonstrations. For newer players, seeing an Immortal inside an actual formation with suggested skills could be far more useful than simply reading the skill description. Small improvements individually, but together they make an increasingly complex game easier to navigate.
6. Thorn Armor Gets Stronger
Patch 2.9.9 also makes a targeted balance adjustment to Thorn Armor, the Legendary Tower of Knowledge skill introduced recently.

Its core mechanic remains unchanged. Once battle begins, Thorn Armor grants all allies Thorn Aegis, reducing Physical Damage received by 6% + 2% per level. When a target already has a Counterattack effect, it also gains DMG Reflect Spikes, returning part of the incoming damage to the attacker before damage reduction is applied.

That second effect is where 2.9.9 makes its change. Reflected damage increases from 6% + 2% per level to 9% + 3% per level, giving Counterattack formations a noticeably stronger return when both effects are active.

Nothing else about the skill is being redesigned. This is a direct numerical buff aimed specifically at the interaction between Thorn Armor and Counterattack.
Maël’s Opinion: Thorn Armor already had a very clear identity, so I like that the developers are strengthening what makes it different rather than reworking it completely. The Physical Damage reduction stays untouched, while the Counterattack synergy becomes more rewarding. Whether that is enough to push the skill into more formations is something we'll have to test, but the direction is clear: if you're committing to Counterattack, Thorn Armor should now have more reason to be part of that build.
7. Maël’s Final Opinion
Patch 2.9.9 is easy to headline with Horus, but there is more happening underneath.
The new Chaos Immortal is clearly the main attraction. Royal Sarcophagus gives him an unusual combination of protection and pressure: individual hits are capped, his Ultimate targets the entire enemy formation, and Punishment creates a window where those enemies take increased damage. Add his Exclusive Artifact and that debuff becomes guaranteed rather than chance-based.
Psychic Vortex adds another interesting piece for magical formations, while the Thorn Armor buff continues to develop the Counterattack side of the current Legendary skill pool.
But what stands out to me across the rest of the patch is accessibility. Artifact materials appear earlier, several Tower of Knowledge skills move forward by entire seasons, Talents become easier to rebuild, buildings become faster to upgrade, and newer players receive more guidance through Immortal demonstrations and the Alliance Charter.
Individually, these are small changes. Together, they suggest Infinity Kingdom is gradually shortening some of the older progression paths as the game continues adding new systems on top of them.
Maël’s Opinion: Horus is the reason most of us will remember 2.9.9, and his kit is different enough that I genuinely want to see what players build around him. But I'm equally interested in the changes happening behind the scenes. IK keeps making older progression faster and more flexible while adding new endgame options. That feels necessary in a game that has accumulated this many systems over the years. As for Horus, I'm keeping the big conclusions for after testing. His damage cap looks unusual, Punishment looks useful, and Psychic Vortex creates some obvious possibilities. But numbers on patch notes and numbers in battle are two very different things.
