🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 18 of my Wukong series. We are following three famous fire immortals and their ally Wukong, who is currently training in the arts of fire. They have had a tough journey as of late, and their adventure is only going to get harder.
📄 Recap of Part 17: “Scorched Fields”
After a fierce battle with Manco, Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta find brief respite in Theodora before being called upon by local farmers to eliminate a threat of giant flame worms destroying their crops. The trio quickly springs into action, determined to protect the village and uncover the source of the unnatural infestation.
🔷 Part 18: “The Giant Fire Worm”
The ground quaked violently beneath their feet as the massive flame worm, nearly three times the size of the others they had vanquished, erupted from the earth. It roared, a guttural sound that sent shivers down their spines, its maw dripping with molten lava that hissed and bubbled ominously.
“Watch out!” Wu yelled, narrowly dodging a stream of lava that seared the ground where she had stood moments before. The intense heat radiated from the worm, making it difficult to breathe.
Hippolyta gripped her sword tightly, her eyes blazing with determination. “We need to bring it down, fast!”
The trio moved in perfect sync, their earlier victories giving them the confidence to face this new threat. Seondeok’s eyes narrowed as she assessed the creature’s movements, looking for a weakness.
“Circle around it!” she called out, losing an arrow that struck one of the worm’s fiery scales, momentarily distracting it. “We need to keep it off balance!”
Wu darted to the left, her movements fluid and precise. She struck at the worm’s exposed flanks, her blades sparking as they met its molten hide. Hippolyta charged from the right, her sword cutting through the air with deadly intent, aiming for the softer underbelly that had been their target with the smaller worms.
The worm retaliated fiercely, lashing out with its massive tail and spewing more lava. Wu and Hippolyta dodged and weaved, narrowly avoiding the deadly streams, but the heat was unbearable, and they could feel their energy waning.
“Seondeok!” Wu shouted, sweat streaming down her face. “We need that explosive arrow!”
Seondeok nodded, her mind racing. She knocked the special arrow, infused with an explosive charge, and took aim. “Keep it steady!” she yelled to her companions.
Wu and Hippolyta intensified their attacks, each strike forcing the worm to rear back, exposing its vulnerable underbelly. The worm thrashed wildly, its movements growing more erratic as it struggled against their coordinated assault.
“Now, Seondeok!” Hippolyta cried, delivering a powerful blow that made the worm hiss in pain.
With a deep breath, Seondeok released the arrow. It flew straight and true, embedding itself into the worm’s exposed underbelly. There was a brief, tense moment of silence before the arrow detonated with a thunderous roar, engulfing the worm in a fiery explosion.
The massive creature let out a final, agonized screech as it collapsed, its molten body convulsing before falling still. The ground shook with its death throes, but as the dust and smoke settled, the trio stood victorious over the fallen beast.
Panting and covered in soot, Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta exchanged triumphant glances. “That was one for the books,” Hippolyta said, wiping sweat from her brow.
Seondeok retrieved her bow, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. “Perfect shot,” Wu praised, clapping her on the shoulder.
As they caught their breath, the grateful farmers approached, their faces alight with relief and admiration. The elderly man who had first approached them handed over a large sack of gold, his hands trembling with gratitude. “You’ve saved our land. We can’t thank you enough.”
Hippolyta took the sack, feeling the weight of the gold. “This should come in handy,” she said with a grin. “We’ll make good use of it.”
They shared a few light-hearted jokes about what to spend their newfound wealth on as they divided the gold. Seondeok joked about buying a fortress, while Wu considered investing in more advanced weaponry. Hippolyta, ever the warrior, mused about acquiring a legendary shield.
With their bounty secure, the trio bid farewell to the villagers and set off once more, their spirits high. The horizon beckoned with new adventures, and as they walked into the setting sun, they knew that together, they were unstoppable.
📄 Recap Questions
What will our heroes do with the money? They have never had financial aspirations, but now that it's here, it could cause some conflict.
Is there any challenge this group can’t live up to, and how long till they find a real challenge?
🔷 Conclusion
Our group is starting to find its stride again as a team after the Wukong fiasco with the philosopher's stone. This is a good sign as their future was looking at risk for a while. Wukong has proven that he is looking to earn their trust back, and it seems to be working.
See you next week!
