🔷 Introduction

Welcome to Part 17 of my Wukong series, where we follow the amazing adventures of our famous fire immortals and their journey to glory. They have had many battles, but not all has been good as of late, but this group of friends has never failed to succeed in their mission to grow!

📄 Recap of Part 16: Echoes of Desperation: The Hunt for Manco

Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta successfully defeat the dark sorcerer Manco, saving their friend Wukong from the grip of malevolent magic. With their bonds strengthened and the city of Theodora on the brink of recovery, they prepare to face whatever new challenges await them, knowing that darker forces may still be at play.

🔷 Part 17: “Scorched Fields”

After their fierce battle with Manco, Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta needed a break. The weight of the fight and the tension of their journey had left them physically drained, their bodies aching from the relentless combat. They found solace in the quiet town of Theodora, where a natural hot spring bubbled beneath the earth, its warm steam rising in gentle wisps against the cool morning air. The trio settled into the steaming waters, allowing the soothing heat to loosen their muscles, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, they let themselves relax.

As they soaked, the peaceful silence was broken by the approach of a group of local farmers. Their faces were drawn with worry, and they spoke in hushed tones, glancing nervously toward the distant fields that surrounded the town. One of them, an elderly man with weathered face, stepped forward and addressed the adventurers.

“I hate to disturb you after all you’ve done for us,” he said, his voice tinged with desperation. “But we’ve got a problem... a big one.”

Wu sat up slightly, her eyes sharp despite the weariness. “What kind of problem?”

The man’s gaze shifted toward the horizon, where smoke could be seen rising from the farmlands. “Flame worms. They’ve been terrorizing our crops, eating everything in sight. We’ve tried to fight them off, but they’re enormous—bigger than any fire beast I’ve ever seen. We’ve lost nearly all of our harvests, and now they’re coming closer to the village. We don’t know what to do.”

Seondeok’s brow furrowed. “Flame worms?” she repeated, her voice laced with curiosity. “I’ve heard of them... but they’re supposed to live in the volcanic regions, not this far from the mountains.”

“They’ve been emerging from the ground, like some kind of plague,” the farmer said. “We’ve had enough. If you could... please, clear our land of them. We can offer what little we have left.”

The offer was modest, but the urgency in the farmer’s voice was enough to ignite something in Wu. She exchanged a quick glance with Seondeok and Hippolyta, who both nodded. Their brief respite was over.

“We’ve faced dark sorcery and mythical beasts,” Wu said, standing slowly from the spring, the water dripping off her skin. “Flame worms won’t be much different.”

Hippolyta’s eyes gleamed with quiet confidence as she stepped out of the water, her sword glinting in the light. “Besides, we could use a bit of fire in our next fight,” she remarked, a smirk tugging at her lips.

Seondeok, ever the strategist, began planning in her mind. “We’ll need to approach carefully. Flame worms are deadly, but they’re not invincible. We’ll use their weakness against them.”

The farmers, seeing their resolve, breathed a collective sigh of relief. “Thank you,” the elderly man said. “We’ve heard whispers of the worms—some say they’re drawn to something beneath the land, something unnatural. We don’t know for sure, but it’s getting worse.”

Wu nodded, her face hardening with purpose. “We’ll find out what’s behind this, and we’ll put an end to it.”

The trio dressed quickly and gathered their weapons, leaving the warmth of the spring behind as they set out toward the fields. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the land. As they walked, the wind carried with it the faint smell of smoke and something deeper—an unnatural heat radiating from the earth.

When they reached the first of the scorched fields, the ground was cracked and brittle, as if the very soil itself had been singed by an unseen fire. The worms had already done their damage, leaving large, circular holes in the earth where crops had once grown. The ground was still warm to the touch, and the air shimmered with heat.

Suddenly, the ground rumbled beneath their feet, and with a deafening roar, a massive flame worm emerged from the earth. Its body was a writhing mass of molten scales, its head crowned with rows of burning, jagged teeth. It hissed, its fiery breath igniting the air around it.

Without hesitation, Wu dashed forward, her movements fluid and precise. She circled the beast, striking at its vulnerable points with the speed of a lightning strike. Seondeok’s arrows flew, aiming for the creature’s eyes, while Hippolyta charged in with her sword, her blows cutting through the air with deadly intent. The flame worm lashed out, its fiery tail sweeping through the air, but the heroes were relentless, each strike weakening it further.

After a fierce battle, the worm collapsed, its body still writhing in its death throes, leaving behind a scorched crater where it had once been. The three adventurers stood over the fallen creature, panting from the exertion but triumphant.

“That was only the first one,” Seondeok remarked, her eyes scanning the area. “There are more.”

Hippolyta wiped the sweat from her brow, her expression serious. “Then let’s make sure we finish what we started.”

Together, they moved forward, determined to clear the land of the flame worms once and for all. The village, once in danger of being consumed by the flames, would soon know peace again—thanks to the heroes who had answered their call.
