🚢 Aurora's Herald - Something's happening 🚢

📕Story Background

In a peaceful and prosperous future, humanity has established a self-sustaining research base on Mars called "Aurora's Herald". One morning, the base commander, Emma, discovered a severe system failure in the base's core computer, "Hephaestus", resulting in the deletion of all research data. If the problem is not resolved quickly, all scientific progress at the base will be completely lost. To find the cause of the failure, Emma convenes key scientists and technicians for an investigation.

🔍Known Clues

Base Layout: The base is divided into four main areas: the living area, the laboratory area, the control center, and the energy supply area. The Hephaestus main computer is located in the control center, which has strict access permissions.

Last Surveillance Records: Surveillance footage shows that at 11 PM last night, cybersecurity expert Alex entered the control center and left at 11:15 PM. After that, the system started to malfunction at 11:20 PM, and all data was deleted within five minutes.

Access Records: The control center's access records show that, besides Alex, two others entered the control center last night: data analyst Lena and system administrator Max. Their entry and exit times are recorded as follows:

  1. Lena: Entered at 9 PM, left at 10 PM.
  2. Max: Entered at 10 PM, left at 10:30 PM.

On-Site Investigation:

  1. A USB drive was found next to the Hephaestus main computer. Analysis revealed that it contained a malicious program responsible for deleting all data.
  2. Some torn paper scraps were found on the control center floor, seemingly from a notebook.
  3. A faint scent of perfume was detected in the control center's air, a fragrance given to female employees as a commemorative gift on the base’s anniversary.

Employee Testimonies:

  1. Lena: Lena said she was performing routine data backups in the control center last night and didn't notice anything unusual. She has a bottle of the commemorative perfume on her desk.
  2. Max: Max stated that he went to the control center to check system updates and didn't find any issues. He has a fresh scratch on his arm, which he claims happened while repairing equipment last night.
  3. Alex: Alex claims he was notified to check for network security vulnerabilities, found everything normal, and then left. He has a notebook on his desk with some programming code, which he says is for developing new firewall software.

Other Clues: Lena’s computer shows some incomplete data backup records, with the last timestamp at 10:15 PM.

  1. Max’s workstation has a small toolbox with some repair tools and a broken watch.
  2. Slight scratches were discovered on the control center door lock, indicating an attempt to open it with tools.

Reactor Log: The Hephaestus operation log shows multiple unauthorized access attempts to modify reactor parameters during the 15 minutes when the surveillance was off.

----- Previous answer (Cabin 205) -------

Detective Forsent and you reasoned that the extreme conditions during the storm made it highly unlikely for anyone to write neatly. The constant and intense motion of the ship would have caused any writing to be uneven and messy. Mr. Bennett's perfectly neat manuscript suggests that he was not writing during the storm as he claimed. This discrepancy in his story points to him fabricating his alibi, making him the prime suspect in the shooting incident.
