INTRODUCTION TO SYNERGY
WHAT EXACTLY IS SYNERGY?
Synergy is the interaction or cooperation of two or more entities to produce a combined effect, which is greater than the sum of their individual or separate effects.
In GoTWiC terms, Synergy can be defined as the art of choosing the commanders in such a way that one commander compliments or improves another commander’s ability. The idea is to not only use 5 best commanders, but 5 best-synchronized commanders. There are many commanders (50 to be precise) in GoTWiC currently and therefore, choosing the right commanders for the lineup can be pretty tough.
So how should we be doing it?
The simple and not so great answer is, choose any 5 commanders you like or prefer.
But such hasty decisions could be disastrous for us in so many ways.
As an example, combining Leila and Sinara is not at all ideal.
So it’s really important to understand Synergy and build the lineups accordingly.
POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND
1. Each synergy revolves around 1 main commander and that commander must be awakened to 4-star.
2. Just like few commanders boost our main commander, there are many commanders which can have negative effect as well (be particular to watch out for this factor).
3. No Synergy counters another Synergy. The countering is done by one commander’s awakening skill against other commanders.
4. Building any synergy setup requires spending and therefore it’s not possible to achieve any kind of synergy setup if you are a 100% f2p player (need at least the main p2p commander for synergy to work).
IMPORTANT SYNERGY TERMS
Bleed: Damage equivalent to 20% of troops’ attack which lasts for few seconds (mostly 5 seconds), which means 1 additional attack in simpler terms
Disarm: The state where Normal attack will miss their targets
Disharmony: The state of attacking own troops when using Active Army Skill
Excited: Unable to initiate Weakness Attacks
Silenced: Unable to cast Active Army Skills
Crit: Crit can be considered as ‘Critical hit’ which usually has 120% coefficient (Jon Snow offers 150% crit). This is just another type of attack, where damage done is slightly higher
Weakness Attack: A variant of attack which is targeted towards the enemy's weakest lineup and cannot miss.
Purification: Clearing or dispelling the debuffs (Silenced, Bleed, Disarmed)
TYPES OF SYNERGIES
There are 3 types of Synergies currently:
1. Female Lineup
2. Bleed/Crit Lineup
3. Weakness Attack/Healing Lineup
I will be explaining each Synergy in a separate guide as it allows me to go a little bit in depth and explain things better and also prevents from having 1 big guide but in this guide, I’d like to discuss a bit about the only 2 commanders who are 100% all-rounder and therefore can be used in any synergy. The idea behind this thought is simple, even if they do not offer any additional value in terms of synergy-wise, they still should give good stats and skill on their own.
Therefore, 2 commanders who fall under this category are:
1. Night King
2. Julien
Let’s have a look at them one by one!
NIGHT KING
As of this moment, Night King is one of the best commanders in-game. He can be obtained only through a special event and even for his awakening, we need to obtain his medals first and then convert them into his awakening tokens.
Having a look at his awakening skill, it’s one of the best one because as we can see here, he revives 90% of the lost troops once any of the allied lineups has suffered a loss over 20% loss. It gives us a huge number advantage because despite losing some troops, we do not lose much on the troop count as they get revived. Additionally, that lineup also gains 20% attack which basically makes it more lethal.
The best part about Night King is that he doesn’t really degrade any synergy and has no specific awakening skill which might/might not align with any synergy. However, since he’s a male commander, adding him in the Female Synergy is not 100% productive but considering his awakening skill and stats, he totally makes up for it and therefore if anyone plays 4 Females + NK lineup, it’s pretty good as well. Similarly, you can add him in the Bleed Synergy too because Sinara would ‘Silence’ him but that won’t affect his awakening skill and therefore he’d perform his best. On a similar front, if you are playing Weakness Synergy, once you have Jaime and another troop-type specific commander who’d provide healing to trigger the weakness attacks (Enzo, Latz, Drake, Hector, etc.), you can add NK in the lineup. Even if you wish to play Triple Weakness, you can go for a fancy lineup like Jaime, Latz, Enzo, Drake and tNight King.
Now let’s also have a quick look at Night King’s premium red weapon, "Eternal Winter" and how it improves his performance.
As we can see here, after suffering the loss of 20%, NK revives 170% of the lost troops which is insanely crazy and along with that, he also increases the damage of that lineup by 100%.
JULIEN
Another commander who’s an honest all-rounder is Julien. Clearly, he’s not as great as Night King but then he’s also pretty much cheaper to obtain and also, he offers stats for all three main troop types - Infantry, Cavalry and Spearmen which makes him very useful, specially if we place him on the wall for the City Defense.
As we can see here, his awakening skill states that for every 1 attack made by Julien’s lineup - lineups damage done is increased by 2%. It is also neutral and does not restrict him to any one specific synergy but considering that he’s a male commander just like NK, adding him in the Female Synergy is slightly less effective but considering the fact that he provides great stats, it kind of balances out that fact pretty well. Another fact which can’t be neglected is ‘cost’. He’s not as expensive as other premium commanders and therefore, even mid-tier spenders can obtain him easily.
But now, let’s also have a look at his premium red weapon as well to understand how Julien’s skills and performance is further improved through it’s help.
Julien’s weapon “Thousand Rivers” at max level increases the damage offered by his awakening skill from 2% to 5% and it also increases the stack limit from 16% to 50% which is pretty good.
Therefore, these 2 commanders can be easily adjusted in any of the three synergies and Julien might not be as awesome as NK but then his price makes him far more valuable and balances that fact.
