🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 14 of my new Tengu series. This will be inspired by the new release of Tengu in our game and incorporating his legend within the realm of Norheim. His story will be roughly based on his historical legend with a twist from within the game we know and love. I will be bringing 1 or 2 new episodes per week so stay tuned for more!
🔷 Recap Part 13: “Thorns”
Guided by the lingering spirit of Ninetails, Tengu journeys beyond the known lands to seek a legendary giant forger after realizing the mysterious presence haunting the forest is far beyond anything he has faced before. Deep within a volcanic forge, the banished giant agrees to craft powerful thorn armor from the remains of the ancient Briar Titan, giving Tengu hope that he may yet stand against the darkness that watches from the shadows.
🔷 Part 14: “Trial of Thorns”
The giant stood before the forge, his single eye fixed upon the dark metallic thorns resting on the anvil.
The firelight danced across their twisted surfaces. Though they appeared motionless, Tengu could feel something stirring within them.
Watching.
Waiting.
The giant placed a hand upon the thorns.
"You believe these will make you stronger."
Tengu nodded.
"I do."
The giant's expression remained unreadable.
"Then you understand nothing."
Before Tengu could respond, the giant slammed his hammer against the anvil.
A deafening crack echoed through the cavern.
The world vanished.
Tengu found himself standing in silence.
The forge was gone.
The mountain was gone.
A cold wind swept across an endless gray plain beneath a sky without sun or stars.
He immediately reached for his sword.

"The trial has begun."
The giant's voice seemed to come from everywhere at once.
"The Briar Titan fed upon suffering. These thorns remember every wound they have ever endured. If they deem your spirit weak, they will consume you."
The gray landscape shifted.
A familiar clearing appeared before him.
Tengu froze.
He recognized it instantly.
The place where he had lost control.
The place he had tried to forget.
The trees swayed violently as wind exploded through the clearing. Branches shattered. The ground cracked. He watched his younger self standing at the center of the destruction.
The memory unfolded exactly as before.
Then the whisper came.
"You failed."
Tengu turned.
The forest beyond the clearing was cloaked in darkness.
Nothing stood within it.
Yet he could feel eyes watching him.
"You speak of control now," the voice continued. "But how many suffered while you learned it?"
The scene dissolved.
Another memory rose around him.
Faces appeared.
Villagers he had failed to protect.
People he could not save.
Each carried disappointment within their eyes.
Each reminded him of a mistake.
A weakness.
A regret.
The weight settled heavily upon his shoulders.
The voice returned.
"You call these lessons."
The darkness thickened.
"You call them mistakes."
The whisper became almost gentle.
"What if they are simply proof of what you are?"
Tengu lowered his gaze.
For a moment, doubt crept into his heart.
The presence felt familiar.
Not because he recognized it.
Because it understood exactly where to strike.
The gray plain trembled.
The shadows stretched across the ground.
Then another voice appeared.
Soft.
Warm.
"Tengu."
His eyes widened.
Silver light drifted across the darkness.
Nine small wisps circled around him.
Ninetails.
Though her form never fully appeared, her presence filled the empty world.
The darkness recoiled.
The whisper fell silent.
Tengu closed his eyes.
The memories remained.
The failures remained.
The pain remained.
But he no longer tried to push them away.
When he finally spoke, his voice was calm.
"Yes."
The shadows paused.
"Those mistakes belong to me."
The wind began to gather around him.
"I cannot erase them."
The currents strengthened.
"I cannot undo them."
The silver light brightened.
"But I will carry them."
The plain erupted with motion.
The darkness cracked.
The memories shattered into fragments of light.
A roar echoed across the empty world.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Defiant.
Countless black thorns burst from the ground around him.
For a brief moment, Tengu saw the spirit of the Briar Titan itself.
A colossal creature covered in jagged thorns and old scars.
Its glowing eyes studied him.
Judging.
Measuring.
Then it bowed its head.
The gray world vanished.
Tengu opened his eyes inside the forge.
The giant stood before the anvil.
A faint smile rested upon his weathered face.
"You passed."
The thorns upon the anvil suddenly came alive.
They twisted across the armor like living vines.
Dark metal spread over the shoulders, chest, and forearms. Razor sharp thorns emerged between the plates, gleaming with hidden power.
The forge fires roared higher.
Tengu reached out and touched one of the thorns.
Immediately, wind spiraled around his arm.
The armor answered.
It remembered.
The giant nodded in approval.

"Now your armor remembers every wound."
Far away, beyond the mountains and forests, something stirred within the darkness surrounding the village.
A pair of ancient eyes slowly opened.
The unseen presence had felt the awakening.
For the first time since it arrived, it smiled.
📄 Recap Questions
- What trial did the giant require Tengu to complete before he could wear the Briar Titan's thorn armor?
- How did Tengu overcome the darkness and earn the approval of the Briar Titan's spirit?
🔷 Conclusion
Before the legendary thorn armor could be forged, Tengu was forced to confront the painful memories and failures he had spent years carrying. By accepting his mistakes instead of running from them, he earned the respect of the Briar Titan's spirit, awakening a powerful new armor that remembers every wound, while far away the mysterious presence lurking near the village sensed its awakening and began to take a greater interest in him.
See you next week!
