🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 8 of my new Medusa series.  This will be inspired by the new release of Medusa in our game and incorporating her legend within the realm of Norheim.  I will be bringing 1 or 2 new episodes per week so stay tuned for more!

🔷 Part 7 Recap: "The Warden Awakens

Anubis emerged from the fractured battlefield, awakened by the bond Alexander and Medusa forged against the natural order of the realm. Declaring their unity an anomaly, he summoned spectral warriors and began the purge meant to erase them.

🔷 Part 8:  "The Judgment of Anubis”

The ghosts closed in before either of them had time to catch a breath. Their forms flickered like torn memories, faces stretched and emptied of all will. They moved without sound, as if judgment itself had taken shape and was marching toward them.

Alexander braced for impact, shield raised. Instead of striking his body, the first ghost slammed straight through his chest. There was no pain, just a sudden hollow cold. His vision blurred and the battlefield vanished around him. He stood alone in a vast plain of broken shields and shattered spears, the remains of battles he once believed he had left behind.

A voice curled through the silence, sharp and familiar. It sounded like Medusa but twisted into something cruel. “You were never a legend. You were just the last one standing.”

Alexander spun, searching for her. The plain was empty. Her voice came again, cutting straight into his doubts. “She was never your equal. She only tolerated you because she had no one else.”

Alexander slammed the edge of his shield against the ground to drown out the lie. The echo rang through the desolate field like a challenge. He steadied his breath. Medusa had never spoken like that. Her truth had always been sharp but never poisoned. This illusion was crafted to isolate him. To make him question the bond they fought so hard to protect.

Far across the phantom battlefield he saw a faint glow through the dust. It pulsed like a heart trying to break free.

He ran toward it.

At the same time Medusa found herself trapped in darkness so complete she could not see her own hands. The air was thick and cold, tasting like stone. Her serpents shivered against her neck, utterly blind. A whisper drifted across the void. It sounded like Alexander, but distant and fading. “Medusa. I am here.”

She reached out. The darkness shifted and an image took shape. Alexander stood before her, his body turning to stone inch by inch. His eyes locked on her with betrayal. “You did this. You always destroy what you touch. The curse follows you like a shadow.”

Her heart clenched. She had feared that truth for so long that seeing it reflected made her stumble. She took a step back, but every serpent hissed at once, curling forward instead of retreating. They sensed the lie even when she doubted herself.

Medusa dug her claws into the ground. She refused to look away from the false Alexander. She stared at him until the illusion wavered. The real Alexander would have fought to his last breath before accusing her of that nightmare. This was Anubis. This was judgment designed to break her.

She reached for the illusion and it fractured like glass.

Light burst through the darkness and she was pulled forward. The battlefield snapped back into place and she saw Alexander racing toward her at the same moment she broke free of the false vision.

The ghosts around them trembled as the truth of their bond tore through the illusions meant to divide them.

Alexander reached her first, breath heavy but clear. “You there?”

“Barely,” she met his gaze. “But I did not believe a word of it.”

Anubis watched from his throne of swirling sand. The glow in his eyes dimmed for a moment as the bond he tried to sever only grew stronger.

The purge had begun, but so had their resistance.

📄 Recap Questions

What emotions or fears did the illusions use to try to separate Alexander and Medusa, and how did each of them break free?

How did their reactions to the illusions reinforce the strength of their bond in the face of Anubis’ judgment?

🔷 Conclusion

The illusions tried to isolate Alexander and Medusa by attacking their deepest insecurities, twisting the voices of those they trusted most. Instead of breaking them apart, the visions only strengthened their connection and weakened Anubis’ control over the battlefield.
