💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome back to my Illusion Battlefield League(IBL) series, where I take a closer look at different matches. The IBL tournament differs from regular IB in that everyone will construct marches and skill builds using a fixed set of skills. At different stages of the tournament, more immortals and skills will become available. Everyone has access to the same immortals and the same skills. Castle skins and Lord Talents do not affect the more fast-paced battles of IBL. Relocations and marching speed are also faster. Relocations and marching speed are also faster. The event is one of the most entertaining events in Infinity Kingdom, and players enjoy spectating, almost like a sporting event. In this article, I’m going to take a closer look at the Week Seven Point Phase match between Server 336’s Dark of Light(DL) and Server 345’s Duck Knights(DK). DK’s positions in this match will be denoted in green while DL’s will be in red.

💠Overview

Both servers are extremely young and are relatively inexperienced in the event. Despite that, the two alliances have put together respectable records heading into this match. DL was 4-1. They lost to Server 231’s CN, but they defeated Server 57’s LoL, an alliance with a wealth of experience. DK was 4-2, losing once to Server M014’s HLF and once to Server 143’s AFF. DK and DL regularly field around 30 players every week, so this match should be fairly close.

💠Starting Positions and Talents

DL

  • Started with 20 players and ended with 31
  • 14 Attack talents
  • 5 Defense talents
  • 1 Support talents

DK

  • Started with 27 players and ended with 35
  • 9 Attack talents
  • 16 Defense talents
  • 2 Support talents

💠Tower 1

DK sent five players to Tower 1 with one overlap, and DL rotated seven with everyone spread out around the tower. Three DL players relocated to DK’s side of the tower, one of which had an excellent edge spawn, so he should be able to block a couple of relocations. In my opinion, DK should have given up Tower 1 because they had picture-perfect relocations for Tower 4. They could have conceded Tower 1 and sent those players to the Central Tower. They could win Tower 4 simply from the opening relocations. DL’s formation needs a lot of work. There was too much space between each player, and only one was adjacent to the tower. They could benefit from using markers.

💠Tower 4

DK sent seven players to Tower 4, and DL sent two. DK could have used fewer players and waited a second to see DL’s relocations. DK could then send the rest to the Central Tower. DL deciding to give up Tower 4 was a good call, as there was no way they were getting there faster than DK was. The two DL members who relocated to Tower 4 should have gone to Tower 1 or the center.

💠Central Tower

DK sent eight players to the Central Tower with two overlaps, and DL sent seven players with one overlap. DK gathered around the top right of the tower while DL surrounded the other three sides. I like DL’s formation more than DK’s. They’re closer to the tower, and they’re taking up more space.

💠Altars

DK sent one player to each altar while DL opted not to waste manpower on the altars.

💠Home Towers

DK stationed one player at their home tower. DL stationed two at theirs and sent a player to DK’s home tower which should never work because DK would just destroy the relocation, forcing the DL player to be stuck in spawn for almost ten minutes.

💠Play-by-Play

At Tower 1, DL blocked two relocations and DK destroyed one in return. DL immediately attempted to take the tower and got more than halfway, but with how far they were from the tower, DK was able to stop it in time. Three more DK players reinforced their teammates at the tower, and they zeroed an enemy who was next to the tower. Both teams traded blows and kept sending players back to the tower. Neither relied much on rallies and mostly sent solo attacks that were largely defended. For the majority of the early game, DL had twice as many members as DL at the tower, but they were still unable to capture it or zero DK fast enough before others came to their aid. Neither team made much progress for 30 minutes until DL finally had significantly more members and captured the tower at the 35-minute mark.

At Tower 4, DK blocked one relocation, giving them a seven-to-one advantage. They captured the tower with little resistance a few minutes later. Despite overwhelming numbers, it took DK nearly 5 minutes to zero the lone member before his teammates relocated back to the tower. DL kept sending more and more players to Tower 4, but DK defended their attacks extremely well and pushed them further and further south, away from the tower. Instead of attempting Tower 4 over and over, they should have tried to siege the center instead and then pivot to Tower 4 if that didn't work. It would force DK to move forces to the center to defend, and DL could find opportunities to teleport to weakly defended objectives.

In the center, DL tried their best to send rallies, but because some players were far from their teammates, they couldn’t rally quickly enough. Also, since they had to send more players to Tower 1 to control the area and DK had more players on the field, DL couldn’t find the manpower to reinforce the center. DK moved their players who were zeroed at Tower 1 to the middle and eventually overwhelmed DL with sheer numbers. DK captured the tower at the 16-minute mark, giving them two towers.

In the opening minutes, DL sent one person to DK’s home tower, but the guard fell asleep and failed to destroy the relocation that was right next to him. To top it off, he left all his marches inside the tower and didn’t garrison himself. DL quickly zeroed him and stole the tower shortly after. Since relocations were still on cooldown, no one was able to stop him before another DL member relocated to help defend. The duo masterfully defended the tower for the next 30 minutes while DK struggled to rally to get rid of the invaders. DL’s move kept the match much closer than it would have otherwise been. With the spawn so close to the tower, it’s extremely surprising and tragic that it took DK so long to retake the tower.

Nearly a quarter of the way into the match, DL led by 10,000 points. They also left their home tower completely unguarded while they attacked the Central Tower and Tower 1. DK noticed and relocated three players from Tower 4 to DL’s home tower. They captured the tower at the 28-minute mark without any difficulty, giving them three towers to DL’s one.

DK finally surpassed DL 34 minutes into the match. Over the course of the rest of the match, DL would expend all their energy on sieging the Central Tower to no avail. DL tried to retake their home tower for the majority of the second half, and they finally did it at the 52-minute mark. Unfortunately, it was too little and too late. DK defended the tower with five players, and DL was just never able to efficiently clear them.

💠Summary

DK’s CN_D.Medusa was the match MVP as they won with 96,950 points to DL’s 50,600. I thought DL’s plan was good, but the execution needs a lot of work. They opted to sack Tower 4, which was a sound decision, but two players went to Tower 4 anyway. Then, at multiple turns in the match, DL had more players at objectives than DK did, but they still failed to secure the objectives in a timely manner. It took them far too long to take Towers 1 and 2. They need to rely less on individual attacks and more on rallies. DK needs to use markers to assign spots in the opening minutes so they don’t end up with so many overlaps. DK did well in recognizing which towers were weak and viable to steal while also defending the Central Tower for the entire game. Both teams could put more effort into destroying relocations. DK rose to 5-2 while DL dropped to 4-2.
