💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome to this month’s edition of Winners and Losers for Patch 2.9.0. Patch 2.9.0 will be released on Thursday, December 18. The patch contains a new version of Throne of the Supreme, but in this article, we will go over all of the other changes. It includes a new event that replaces Primal Pinball, a number of optimizations, and several buffs to Chaos immortals.

💠Table of Contents

  • Buffs
  • Optimizations
  • Zuma Tower
  • Summary

💠Buffs

Apollo’s buff bumps Energy Regen from 66/s to 80/s (~21% faster), pulling his first ultimate forward by roughly a second in typical builds. That earlier firepower smooths his early rotation and helps in mirror matches, but it is unlikely to flip most outcomes on its own. It’s a quality-of-life upgrade that improves consistency rather than a meta-defining shift, good if you already field Apollo, not a reason to pivot your lineup.

Winners: Apollo

Losers: N/A

Ares’ buff shifts him from a streaky bruiser into a reliable front-line disruptor. He gets an additional passive that makes him immune to crowd control. The second part of the buff will increase the rate at which his ultimate. On the active, the Frighten application got both wider and deeper. The proc chance now scales from 50% to 70% and cuts barrier strength by 50% for 6s (up from 30%). His biggest problem was his low proc chance, and this buff meaningfully raises his reliability and team value. Fu Fei’s team-wide control immunity ability will finally be countered.

Winners: Ares

Losers: Fu Fei

Nine Tails’ new passive is a clean meta fit: a flat 30% damage amp to backline allies turns her into a premium enabler for Loki/Apollo (or other carry) lanes, and with Ares now a consistent Fu Fei counter, she neatly replaces Fu Fei in anti-Ares lineups. Because Nine Tails herself isn’t compromised by Frighten and her partner’s output spikes under the passive.

Winners: Nine Tails, Backline DPS immortals

Losers: Fu Fei

💠Optimizations

Monster difficulty in Mercantile Path now matches the Level 60 Legendary Season entry bar, and the rewards have been increased to keep pace. This should smooth progression and improve time-to-reward for accounts at or above the opener threshold, while undergeared teams should bolster sustain and crowd control for safety. Theia’s Roulette also grants more Gold and more Holy and Shadow Dragon Souls, which raises spin value and speeds up dragon progression.

Winners: Everyone

Losers: N/A

Infernal Assault has been optimized across difficulty, rewards, and payout pacing. Gold from destroying cores and furnaces has been significantly increased, and a diminishing-returns system now applies to activity earnings per round—attempts 1–100 pay 100%, 101–200 pay 60%, 201–300 pay 30%, and 300+ pay 10%, with the counter resetting when a new activity round begins. I personally like this change as it places a soft limit on AP expenditure and will frontload the amount of gold everyone gets from Infernal Assault.

Winners: Players with no AP

Losers: Players with tons of AP

💠Zuma Tower

Zuma Tower replaces Primal Pinball as a high-risk, high-reward tower-climbing event that still pays out Stardust and Crimson Moonlight. Each attempt randomly moves you up or down 1–2 floors or leaves you in place; you can press your luck by continuing to climb for better rewards at the risk of descending, or you can claim and immediately reset to Floor 1 to start a new run. Entry uses Pearl of Finding, and the primary rewards include Stardust, Crimson Moonlight, and Castle Decoration Fragments. Primal Pinball is generally a poor event that doesn’t really reward players with what they need. Some need Crimson Moonlight and frequently get Stardust, and vice versa. The event desperately needed a revamp.

Winners: Everyone

Losers: N/A

💠Summary

Apollo, Nine Tails, and Ares are getting significant buffs. A couple of changes in Infernal Assault and Mercantile Path should benefit most players. Zuma Tower is a new event that will replace Primal Pinball.
