🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 15 of Leonidas' quest. We will be following the story of how he became one of the most formidable leaders in history and all of the trials and challenges he faced in his lifetime to get to the pinnacle of life. It started when he was a young boy and had some incredible moments in his life, which led him to be the incredible leader he is today.

🔷 Summary of Part 14: "Brink of War"

Leonidas discovers that the troll threat has evolved into something far more dangerous than they had originally thought. This troll threat is led by dark magic and a powerful new chief. With reinforcements days away, he and his chosen warriors must face the impossible to protect their homeland.

🔷 Part 15: “The Troll War”

The fire had burned low, but neither of them moved. Leonidas sat on a rock, shoulders hunched, the weight of what he’d seen still pressing heavy against his ribs. Ninetails approached from the shadows, quiet as always, but her eyes shone with something fierce and unreadable.

“You’re bleeding,” she said softly.

Leonidas looked down. A shallow cut ran across his forearm, likely from a thorned branch in the dark or a sharp-edged rock in the climb. He hadn’t even noticed it. “It’s nothing.”

“Let me,” she insisted.

She knelt beside him, her hands calloused from war yet gentle as they hovered over the wound. A soft, pulsing light began to glow from her fingertips, pale gold, like sunlight through fog. The skin knit together before his eyes, faster than any salve, leaving behind nothing but clean flesh and a whisper of warmth.

He blinked. “What in the gods’ name was that?”

Ninetails met his gaze. “Only a glimpse. I can do more. Much more. But it takes energy. Preparation. Focus. I’ve hidden it for a reason… until now.”

Leonidas stood slowly, the firelight casting a flicker across his face. “Then maybe the gods haven’t abandoned us after all.” He turned toward the darkened edge of camp, eyes scanning for movement. “Stay here. I need the commanders.”

Within the hour, six men and one woman stood in a tight circle around the dwindling fire, hoods low, faces grim. Leonidas paced once around them, his jaw clenched.

“We go to Varnholt no longer,” he said. “We face them here. Head on. In the pass before the lowlands.”

Murmurs. Confusion. Then a sharp voice from Commander Darios. “We’ll be crushed. You saw them. You know what they are now. Trolls. Enhanced. Enchanted.”

“Yes,” Leonidas said. “Stronger. More of them. But they bleed, and we’ve bled more than they’ve ever dreamed. We’ve won the impossible before!”

“Against men,” another commander snapped.

Leonidas stepped forward, eyes blazing. “They think their strength makes them gods. But we have a goddess.”

He turned to Ninetails, who stepped forward, lifting her hands just slightly. The gold light returned, faint but undeniable. Some of the commanders recoiled. Others leaned in.

“She is not alone,” Leonidas said. “I’ve seen what she can do, and with her at our side, we are not seven hundred. We are seven thousand. We will stand. And when the trolls come screaming into our spears, they will find not prey… but reckoning.”

Silence. Then, one by one, the commanders bowed their heads.

By morning, the camp was alive with movement. Armor was strapped tight, blades sharpened, and war paint smeared across weathered faces. There were no illusions about what lay ahead. They would die, many of them. But not without making the enemy earn every inch of blood.

Ninetails moved through the lines like a spirit, touching shoulders, murmuring words in an old tongue. Leonidas watched her, a strange hope forming in the space where fear once lived.

As the sun crested the ridge, Leonidas raised his sword to the sky.

“Let them come,” he said.

And the mountain answered with silence that promised war.

📄 Recap Questions

Will the Spartans be able to overcome the troll threat, or will they succumb to the power of the shaman trolls?

Is Leonidas' plan truly brilliant or complete madness?

🔷 Conclusion

Leonidas seems to have gone mad with his new plan; however, it might just be the right kind of crazy that they need to win a battle of this caliber. There is a grave danger when fighting trolls, let alone being outnumbered by them. With strong warriors and a goddess at your back, there is always a chance to survive and win the battle. But will they be able to?
