🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 8 of my new Tengu series.
This will be inspired by the new release of Tengu in our game and incorporating his legend within the realm of Norheim. His story will be roughly based on his historical legend with a twist from within the game we know and love.
I will be bringing 1 or 2 new episodes per week so stay tuned for more!
🔷 Recap Part 7: “Defend or Pursue”
Tengu chose to save the villagers trapped in the burning huts instead of pursuing El Cid. Realizing the guardian would always protect civilians first, Cid split his army and sent half his soldiers toward the forest where the villagers had fled.
🔷 Part 8: “The Wind Can’t Be Everywhere ”
The wind carried Tengu across the blackened edge of the village.
Smoke followed him into the trees as he moved toward the forest where the villagers had fled. The ground beneath his feet changed from sand to roots and fallen leaves. The air felt cooler beneath the canopy, but the tension in the wind had not eased.
He heard voices ahead.
Not screams. Commands.
Tengu slowed.
Through the trunks he saw them.
Several soldiers stood in a loose circle among the trees. Their shields rested against the ground and their spears pointed inward. In the center of that circle knelt a small group of villagers.
Their hands were bound with rough cord.
A fisherman struggled against the rope around his wrists. A soldier struck him across the shoulder with the shaft of a spear and forced him back to the ground. A child cried beside an older woman who held him close.
Tengu stepped forward from the shadows.
The wind stirred the leaves above him.
The soldiers turned at once. Spears lifted. Shields rose into position.
None of them charged.
Instead one of the soldiers placed the edge of his blade against the fisherman’s neck.
Another soldier pulled the child closer.
They had been waiting.

Far beyond the trees the distant clash of battle still echoed from the burning village. But here in the forest clearing the air felt strangely still.
Tengu’s eyes moved across the bound villagers.
Then they lifted toward the soldiers.
The wind tightened around his cloak.
One step forward and the current would carry him through the circle before the soldiers could react. Their formation was weak. Their guard uneven.
He could break them.
But not before the blades touched the villagers.
The fisherman saw him standing between the trees.
Hope flashed across the man’s face.
The soldier pressing the blade against his throat noticed it too.
“Do not move,” the soldier said.
Tengu remained still.
The wind circled slowly through the clearing, lifting dust and leaves but never striking.
A soldier near the back of the group gave a quiet signal.
More figures emerged from between the trees. Reinforcements from the force that had split toward the forest. Their shields formed a wider ring around the captives.
The trap closed.
Tengu could feel the anger rising in his chest. The wind responded to it immediately. Branches creaked overhead and loose leaves spun through the air.
But he forced the current to remain narrow.
If he let it surge outward the soldiers would react.
And the villagers would suffer first.
Bootsteps approached from deeper within the trees.
The soldiers shifted aside to create a path.
El Cid stepped into the clearing.
He did not rush.
His gaze passed over the captives before settling on the guardian standing among the trees. The faint smoke of the burning village drifted between them.
“You protect them,” Cid said calmly.
The words were not spoken as a question.
Tengu did not answer.
He did not need to.
The commander studied the wind circling the clearing.

“Then you will fight carefully.”
Cid raised one hand slightly.
The soldiers tightened their grip on the prisoners.
The fisherman’s breath grew shallow beneath the blade at his throat.
Across the clearing the wind guardian stood silent while the current pressed harder against the leaves.
The battle on the shore had been a test of strength.
This was something different.
Cid had not come to overpower the guardian.
He had come to control him.
📄 Recap Questions
- What did Tengu discover when he reached the forest where the villagers had fled?
- Why did Tengu hesitate to attack the soldiers surrounding the captives?
🔷 Conclusion
Tengu now faced an enemy who understood the weakness within his compassion. As the forest clearing became a silent standoff, the next move would decide whether the guardian could protect the villagers without losing the battle itself.
See you next week!
