🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 14 of Leonidas' quest. We will be following the story of how he became one of the most formidable leaders in history and all of the trials and challenges he faced in his lifetime to get to the pinnacle of life. It started when he was a young boy and had some incredible moments in his life, which led him to be the incredible leader he is today.

🔷 Summary of Part 13: "The Age of Trolls"

A small group of Spartans moves quietly into the dangerous plains of Norheim, hunting deadly trolls and uncovering signs of a greater threat. After capturing a young troll, they learn a warning of an oncoming invasion, the Age of Trolls, just as distant drums begin to shake the ground.

🔷 Part 14: “Brink of War"

The morning after the drums began, the air felt thicker, like the land itself was holding its breath. Leonidas stood alone at the edge of the ridge, staring out at the gray horizon. Behind him, the men were quiet. Too quiet. The kind of silence that comes when every breath might be your last.

He called for the scout just after dawn. A lean, fast-footed soldier named Kastos. Young, but reliable. Kastos didn’t flinch when Leonidas told him what needed to be done.

“Ride hard,” he said. “Don’t stop unless the horse falls under you. Get to Sparta. Tell them what we saw. The trolls are coming, and this time, it’s not just clubs and rage. It’s war.”

Kastos nodded, slapped his fist to his chest, and was gone. His horse kicked up frost and vanished down the winding path toward the lowlands.

Leonidas turned back to the camp. Three days. That was all he had. He told the others they would meet the reinforcements in a village called Varnholt, a narrow outpost nestled between two mountain spines. If Sparta moved quickly, they could form a line there. Maybe hold it.

But that was a lot of maybes, and maybe didn't win wars.

That night, with the moon half-drowned in clouds, Leonidas picked four to go with him on a mission they might not return from. Ninetails, his second, named for the jagged scars that tore across his back. And three more—Theros, quiet but deadly with a blade; Corin the tracker; and Menes, who had fought trolls before and lived to tell the tale. Just barely.

They moved out before first light. No torches. No sound. The mountains swallowed them up like they didn’t want them to come back.

It took half a day of climbing and another full night of tracking before they found what they were looking for. A clearing deep in the folds of the north range, lit with strange green fire. Trolls moved in and out of a great stone circle, their bodies glowing faintly in the dark. But something was different.

The smaller ones. The runners. The ones that usually fled when cornered. They were standing tall now. Their muscles bulged unnaturally. Their eyes glowed like coals. And standing in the center of it all was something they hadn’t seen before.

The chief.

Bigger than the others by half a man’s height, draped in animal hides and iron chains. His arms were painted with runes that shimmered like water. He raised both hands and muttered words that twisted the air. One of the small trolls dropped to its knees, convulsed, then stood, changed. Hardened. Enhanced.

Magic. Real and dangerous.

Leonidas clenched his jaw. They had hoped to find a weakness. Instead, they found the opposite.

They didn’t wait to see more. He gave the signal, and they pulled back the way they came, careful not to make a sound. Every rock and every branch suddenly felt like a trap waiting to snap.

When they finally reached their camp again, Leonidas didn’t speak for a long while.

Then he looked at Ninetails and said, “We need another plan.”

📄 Recap Questions

What does Leonidas plan on doing with the new information he has on the trolls' plans, and is it going to be enough?

What can the Spartans possibly do against such a large army?

🔷 Conclusion

Leonidas faces a challenge unlike anything he has ever faced. The goblins were easy; he could cut them down like butter, but the trolls. They have skin like stone and are massive. They will be much more challenging opponents, and he won’t be able to do it alone. He will need the help and support of all those around him who are loyal to him and everything he stands for.
