HELLO AND WELCOME TO HONORS CORNER!

"Moves That Matter: Tactics, Energy, and How Not to Get Blitzed by Merlin"

Introduction: Let's Talk Strategy

So now that we've established what Battle Chess is (and why it might be a low-key gem for F2P and mid-spenders), it's time to dig into the part that separates the hopefuls from the high-rankers: tactics.

In this second part of the series, I'll walk through how to manage your resources, build a solid deck, and react to popular enemy strategies. Trust me, nothing feels worse than getting steamrolled by a Cleopatra summon rush or watching Hannibal cleave through your whole board while your AoE spells are still "cooling down."

Let's break it down step by step.

1. Energy Management – How to Make Every Mark Count

Energy Management and Immortal Matchups take up the largest shares of strategic weight.

Spell Timing and Deployment Order also play significant roles.

And while RNG (randomness) can’t be ignored, it has a smaller influence—though it can still swing a close fight.

Let's start with the most crucial thing: Energy Marks. These trickle in over time, and everything from summoning Immortals to casting spells costs energy. Mismanaging this early can put you on the back foot for the match.

Pro Tip:

Don't spend all your energy right away. Open strong with a durable unit (like El Cid or Charles) or a low-cost support Immortal. This gives you a stable front line without exhausting your entire bar.

What You Should Do:

  • Save some energy early in case you need to counter an enemy rush.
  • If your opponent plays aggressively, respond smart, not fast.
  • Drop high-value spells only when the enemy units are grouped.

2. Deck Building – What Makes a Strong 9-Piece Lineup?

You only get 9 pieces in your deck—6 appear in your opening "hand," and 3 sit in reserve. So how do you decide what cuts?

Suggested Composition:

  • 3 Damage Immortals – Spread across magic and physical, ideally with cleave or AoE potential (e.g., Hannibal, Merlin).
  • 2 Durable Tanks – Charles, El Cid, – someone to hold the line.
  • 1 Healer/Support – Zenobia, Dido to help stabilise.
  • 3 Arcane Cards – A mix of AoE, healing, and utility.

1. Balanced (Hybrid):

  • 6 Immortals
  • 3 Arcane Cards
  • Ideal for flexibility and reactive gameplay.

2. Spell-Heavy (Control/Burst):

  • 5 Immortals
  • 4 Arcane Cards
  • Great for disrupting the enemy with frequent spell casts.

3. Unit-Heavy (Sustain/Pressure):

  • 7 Immortals
  • 2 Arcane Cards
  • Focuses on overwhelming the board with strong or durable units

Do you have enough survivability AND damage to carry into Speed-Up Mode?

3. Early vs. Late Game Decisions

Here’s a pie chart showing the suggested energy usage throughout different phases of a Battle Chess match. It helps visualize how to manage your Energy Marks wisely from early game to the final Speed-Up phase.

Early Game – Stay flexible. Don't rush your deployment, unless you're confident in the board state. Preserve energy and probe your opponent's strategy.

Mid Game – Rotate dead pieces back in only if it will shift momentum. Keep energy for reactions, not just spam.

Late Game / Speed-Up Mode – This is your time to go big or go home. Energy generation is faster. Kings start losing HP. Unleash your biggest combos and overwhelm your opponent.

4. Common Opponent Strategies (And How to Beat Them)

Let's break down some well-known strategies and how to counter them:

Swarm Strategy (Cleopatra, Edward)

Example of Swam Strategy, observe how Edward is able to do double DMG, he splits, similar to Cleopatra. Ultiise immortals that offer more stats, like Edward. However, be aware of counter measures from Acane skills and CC. Think how to counter thee counter.

What It Is: They spam low-cost summons to flood the board.

Weakness: Vulnerable to AoE.

Counter:

  • Bring Arcane Cards like Call of Thunder or Tsunami.
  • Summon cleave units like Hannibal.
  • Don't let them crowd your King—keep a buffer zone.

Spell Spam (Merlin + Moctezuma)

Both teams got this immortal 3x on to the board. See how the bottom left immortal was able to generate Energy marks compared to the right side who did not. By making energy marks you are able to upload a higher energy user immortal onto the board.

What It Is: Minimal units, maximum spell spam.

Weakness: Squishy backline and spell reliance.

Counter:

  • Use fast units to dive their casters.
  • Save heals and buffs for after AoE hits.
  • Don't bunch up. Spread units to avoid splash damage.

Hannibal Carry (Stack & Cleave)

What It Is: Feed Hannibal kills until he can 1v4.

Weakness: Needs early momentum.

Counter:

  • Burst him down early.
  • Use crowd control (like stuns or slows).
  • Don't feed him free kills—kite if needed.

Tank Stall (Charles, El Cid, )

What It Is: Absorb your damage until your King outlasts yours.

Weakness: Weak damage output.

Counter:

  • Bring sustain and strong single-target nukes.
  • Drop spells to break formations.
  • Consider Speed-Up Mode win by maintaining King HP lead.

5. Takeaway Tips for Smarter Play

Here's what I always keep in mind:

  • Never spend your energy at once unless you're going for a kill.
  • Always save one spell for emergencies—don't get caught defenceless.
  • King placement wins games—dodge the AoE, and stay alive longer.
  • RNG is real—you won't always draw the perfect hand. Adapt and improvise.
  • Spells win late-game—especially in Speed-Up Mode. Plan accordingly.

Conclusion – Be the Player They Fear

Battle Chess doesn't cost money—it costs awareness. If you can read the board, adapt your deployment, and make the most of your Energy Marks, you'll outwit players with stronger Immortals.

It is important to use tht battle stats, to help analyses how your build stacks up against enemy opponents. Here, we see that i won the match with overpowering DMG, compared to my Enemy opponent. My snipe did his job well and reduced the health points of the King, whereas enemies Robin attacked immortals. The RNG was on my side for that match!!

"Moves That Matter: Tactics, Energy, and How Not to Get Blitzed by Merlin"

So—after all the tactics, spell combos, and deployment debates, the big question is this: are these strategies still relevant in today's Battle Chess meta?

Honestly? Yes… but with a twist.

The foundation of good Battle Chess play—smart energy management, knowing when to deploy Immortals and understanding skill synergy—is timeless. The meta may shift as new Immortals are introduced or as players experiment with wild combinations, but the game remains a careful balance of timing, roster control, and resource prioritisation.

And that's the beauty of it: there isn't just one "best" way to win.

Yes, some builds still dominate. A deck of 6 Immortals and 3 Arcane Cards gives you versatility—solid bodies on the board and spells for counterplay. Others swear by 9 Immortals for relentless pressure, while some lean heavily on spell-heavy control decks that let Merlin and Moctezuma go full chaos mage mode.

Has Merlin remained the top pick for Magical Burst or Cleopatra? She's still a queen of magical AoE pressure—especially when supported by cards like Blizzard or Call of Thunder. Robin Hood, meanwhile, has carved out a niche as the go-to sniper. His ability to target the backline and shut down key threats makes him invaluable in counter builds.

But here's what matters: understanding your team.

It's not just about who you deploy—it's about when and why. Starting a match by throwing out expensive Immortals might seem powerful, but if it drains your energy bar and sets your opponents up with a fast charge, it's a quick ticket to disaster. Knowing that energy bar mechanics power up your Immortals over time means that patience—especially early game—can be the difference between steamrolling or getting steamrolled.

And that leads to perhaps the most underrated element of Battle Chess success: precision through experimentation.

You've got to try things. Learn how each Immortal behaves. It is a good idea to mix and match skills. Explore immortal and card synergies. Yes, there are staples—Robin Hood, Cleopatra, and Moctezuma consistently shine in most meta builds—but the rest of your deck should reflect your playstyle.

Do you prefer raw damage? Then focus onAoE combos. Want to outlast and control? Try healing builds with zoning spells. Need a glass cannon sniper setup? Robin's waiting.

Points to consider

  • Energy Management is Crucial: A strong opening doesn't mean dumping your hand—it's about building energy and deploying wisely.
  • Conserve energy early, and strike hard when it counts.
  • Know your enemy's strategy and have a counter ready.
  • Spells and positioning decide the game.
  • Cleo, Robin, and Moctezuma are still core picks—they offer consistent value across many deck types.
  • Know your Immortals and their skills—understanding timing, ultimates, and AI behaviour is just as important as raw stats.
  • Experiment to Succeed: There is no universal best build. But there is a build that's best for you.
  • Meta Evolves, but Fundamentals Remain: Keep adapting, keep refining, and always play with purpose.

Next time, we'll explore specific Immortal combos and counters, breaking down why Robin Hood, Zenobia, and El Cid are sleeper MVPs—and how to use them to control the board. Also, deck-building strategies in more detail and break down immortal combinations with arcane card synerises. So, you will be battle ready, for when the new Battle Season and ready to climb the Rankings.

Until then, queue smart, think faster, and may your Tsunami hit every Edward clone in sight. Every move matters and the King isn't going to protect himself.
