Prologue

LadySam had finished with updating the Alliance Ledger and as she waited for the ink to dry she felt a restless energy, she could not put it into words but she felt it.  At times like this, she missed the reassuring sound of Bezedash amusing himself by touching the inkwell or rearranging things on her desk. The sound of his voice or his footfalls in the halls of the castle. He had an energy that she could not match and she missed him a great deal. Eagerly awaiting his return; whenever that would be she could not be sure. Westeros was a dangerous and unpredictable place but he was never far from her thoughts.

Several days had passed since she sent the revised requirements for UnC and a clearer idea of what she wanted the alliance to be. One member had already been dismissed and this was never a pleasant task. Since she had taken a leadership position with UnC she realized that some duties were hers alone.

LadySam stood up and went to where she kept her whiskey. Reaching for a glass, she set it in front of her and poured a healthy drink before replacing the stopper and her eye caught a tome on the shelf that she had forgotten she had. Turning, she set the glass on her desk before going back to the shelf and gently pulled the tome from its place; “Poetry by Lady Becky Hemsley”

It seemed a lifetime since she had opened it and yet she knew every word by heart. The responsibilities here with the Alliance her time was not usually her own; making a note to herself she would try to make time for herself.

As she reflected on the words on the page, LadySam was alerted someone was at the door; “Come in.” she said absentmindedly.  Rising from her chair, she closed the tome, and returned it to the shelf.

Maester Rowan slowly approached her with scroll in hand. “LadySam, forgive the intrusion but I have received dire news that needed to be brought to your attention immediately.” He held out the scroll for LadySam; her face turned ashen at what she was reading:

Maester Rowan gave LadySam a moment to recover and cleared his throat awaiting her response.

LadySam slowly walked to a chair near the fire and motioned for the maester to follow. “What can you tell me about the Night’s King?” she managed to whisper. Her mind raced, she had heard the stories but believed them to be legend or an old wive’s tale  told to make children behave.

Maester Rowan took a seat and told the story of the Children of the Forest and their war with the First Men and the Andals. How the Children created the Night's King to defeat their enemies.

LadySam listened with rapt attention, she had always trusted things she saw not things she heard. It was almost unimaginable. “Maester, they can be defeated, the wights….can’t they?”

The Maester paused and pursed his lips, “I leave that to you and your council LadySam, they were defeated thousands of years ago or so people thought.” With that he stood and asked “Is there anything else LadySam?”

“Yes, get word to LadyEfrideet, SCuM, Lyant and the rest of our council as quick as you can. We will meet in the War Room at once.”

As Maester Rowan quickly left her study, LadySam ran her hand through her hair and sighed. It was time for her to lead, her way, unapologetically and decisively.  Come what may she would do her best and she could not fail, the Realm was counting on her, on all of them.

The Meeting

LadySam had asked not to be disturbed until the council was assembled. She had to inspire the council to once again put their lives and the lives of their troops and commanders on the line for the Realm. There was no time to consult with the King, the trip North would take weeks and time was of the essence.

An urgent knock on the door signaled LadySam that the council was ready; she rose from her chair and called out “I’m on my way.” Clutching the scroll from the Citadel she walked to the door. The hallways of the castle were quiet and her footfalls echoed as she walked.  She remembered the words she had read earlier and thought of what she would say to the council. The door just feet ahead of her,  she cleared her throat and took a deep breath before the door was opened for her and she entered the room.

The energy of the room shifted to LadySam and grew silent; they were waiting for her to speak, to lead and to brief them on the current situation.

“Seven blessings to you all, Lords and Ladies of the Council of UnC. Today I received word from the Night’s Watch; the Wall has been breached by the Night’s King and his armies. They are making their way South and must be stopped.”

Letting her words wash over the council, several gasps could be heard and someone scoffed; “a tale of legend” someone muttered. LadySam could not determine who said it but she looked out at the group and snapped back “I assure you it is no legend; I have been briefed by Maester Rowan and the threat is real. We must prepare and set out for Winterfell as soon as we can. They must be stopped before the army of the dead has the chance to get larger.”

Having their full attention now she continued; “Pack all the wheat, warm clothes and all your weapons that you can. We will need those with Royal troops, Elite, Light; all you can muster to defeat our enemy. I will direct the Rookery to pack ravens to try to keep in touch with Winterfell for updates but we have to leave within the next couple of days.”

In two days time, the Alliance began their journey North to Winterfell and the Kingdom of the North. LadySam had never been there before and wished it were under better circumstances. As they got closer; the air changed and the temperature dropped.

LadySam had written specific instructions on a scroll that she left with Maester Rowan, to be opened if he received word that they failed.  LadyEfrideet had been asked to stay in The Vale to oversee those that were unable to travel including children, older folk and the infirmed.

The Road

Several ravens had been exchanged with Winterfell along the way; telling of fierce battles and substantial Northern losses. The news was not good but they would arrive in just a day. Currently, the army of the dead had moved past Last Hearth and were close to the Dreadfort.  LadySam knew that Northern losses meant the Night’s King army grew.

The Arrival at Winterfell

Forty-eight hours later, UnC began arriving in Winterfell; tired and dirty from the road; LadySam was exhausted and could have slept for a week. They were greeted by the Captain of the House Guard of Winterfell and shown where to make their temporary camp. LadySam67, Freedom Nadd the Knights Commander of UnC, Lyant and SCuM were asked to attend a feast with those already there for the fight.

A commotion at the gate; LadySam saw the Sigil of the King and Queen and her and her retinue formed a receiving line along with the residents of Winterfell to welcome the honored guests before entering. King Vangark, his Queen, Chayle along with ch1r1sh and several others arrived and quickly walked the reception line before entering the castle.

The meeting of the “living” had been short, direct and to the point; the King would lead the rallies with Spears; the Queen would lead with the same; ShinichiKud0 would lead with Infantry and THE WICH would lead with Cavalry. UnC was asked to support and would fill the rallies with as many dragons as they could at one time.

The group was told to attack the Night’s King generals first to weaken him; this was accomplished in rallies and single army attacks. Losses were heavy and wheat grew scarce but finally K276 was able to defeat the enemy.
