📕Story Background

Ashbourne Museum stands in a historic English city. After ten years of restoration, the museum was finally preparing to unveil a painting that had been missing for nearly a century: The Blue Madonna.

Before the opening ceremony, museum curator Helena Ward announced that a hidden inscription beneath the painting might prove that it once belonged to an art collector who had been murdered decades earlier.

At 9:20 PM, Helena was found dead inside the restoration studio. The electronic door was locked, the window had been painted shut, and the access log showed Helena as the last person to enter.

However, the museum’s security cameras displayed a seven-minute loop between 9:10 and 9:17. The staff claimed it was caused by an automatic system reboot.

The painting appeared untouched, but a small patch of blue pigment had been scraped from its lower-left corner. Helena was holding a small piece of numbered silver restoration foil.

A sentence remained on the studio whiteboard:

“The true signature is not on the canvas.”

The access records showed no one else entering. The security footage showed nothing unusual. Yet someone had clearly used the museum’s own security system to conceal a secret that never appeared on camera.

Suspects

Marcus Vale

“I was greeting donors in the main hall. Helena opposed the plans for the new wing, but I had no reason to hurt her.”

Marcus was the museum’s deputy director and oversaw fundraising. He was promoting a new wing funded by a private collector.

Livia Hart

“I was checking restoration chemicals in the materials room. Helena would not allow me to touch the painting, so I never entered the studio.”

Livia was the lead conservator assigned to The Blue Madonna. She had openly disagreed with Helena’s restoration methods.

Daniel Frost

“The security system really did reboot. I stayed in the security room dealing with the alarm panel and never left.”

Daniel was the museum’s security supervisor. He had the highest level of access and knew the weaknesses of the surveillance system.

Elise Rowan

“I was viewing the private preview in the main gallery. The painting once belonged to my family, but I only wanted it returned. I did not want Helena harmed.”

Elise was a private collector. Her family once owned the painting, but all records of the ownership disappeared after an old fire.

🔍Known Clues

1.The restoration studio was electronically locked, the access log showed Helena as the last person to enter, and the window had been painted shut.

2.The security footage looped between 9:10 and 9:17, but the system log showed that the loop had been activated at 8:46.

3.A small patch of blue pigment had been scraped from the lower-left corner of The Blue Madonna, but no scraping tool was found on the worktable.

4.The silver restoration foil in Helena’s hand bore a serial number, and a roll of restoration foil with the same number was missing from the museum’s inventory.

5.The whiteboard read, “The true signature is not on the canvas,” written with Helena’s usual black marker.

6.The ventilation system continued running after 9:10, but the room still smelled of a citrus solvent used only to remove old protective layers.

7.Fresh blue pigment powder was found on the backup keyboard in the security room, although Daniel claimed he had not touched any exhibits.

8.A page had been torn from Elise’s old collection catalogue. Its torn edge matched the half-page of archival material left on Helena’s desk.

----- Previous answer (The Last Signal at Greyhaven Lighthouse) -----

Culprit: Thomas Vane

Motive: Thomas had secretly altered the lighthouse mechanism during the old shipwreck and helped the harbor committee falsify the records. Arthur discovered the truth and planned to expose him.

Deduction Logic – The Mechanical Signal

Thomas was the only suspect with enough knowledge to manipulate the lens, generator, radio, and maintenance structure.

The warm generator disproves his alibi. The red cord, missing rope, wax traces, and identical Morse intervals indicate a timed mechanical device. The device stopped the lens at 11:07 and triggered the radio after it had been disconnected.

The wet footprints and sea salt were staged to suggest an intruder from the window. In reality, Thomas used the lighthouse’s maintenance route.

Arthur’s ink-stained fingers, the harbor seal, and the rebound shipwreck report connect the murder to the falsified records.

Crime Reconstruction

Thomas entered the lantern room before the storm, installed a delayed mechanism, and connected it to the lens and radio system. He then left through the maintenance route.

Arthur later locked the door from inside, unaware that the mechanism had been prepared. At 11:07, it stopped the lens, caused the fatal accident, and triggered the false Morse signals.

Thomas had already removed the rope and staged wet footprints, making the locked room appear impossible.

Conclusion

The warm generator, mechanical cord system, false footprints, and altered shipwreck records prove that Thomas planned the murder to silence Arthur and hide the truth.
