📕Story Background

Greyhaven Lighthouse stands on a desolate stretch of the northern English coast. It has guarded the waters for more than a century, but the government plans to shut down the old lighthouse, leaving its keeper, Arthur Bell, without a job.

During a violent storm, Arthur claimed that he had uncovered the truth behind a shipwreck that occurred years ago. He planned to send one final radio report before midnight, exposing someone who had deliberately falsified the official record.

At 11:15 PM, Arthur was found dead inside the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse. The iron door was locked from the inside, and the only window was tightly shut.

The main lighthouse lamp was still burning, but its rotating lens had stopped facing the wrong direction. The radio equipment had been disconnected, yet nearby fishermen claimed they heard three bursts of Morse code at 11:00 PM.

Arthur’s logbook ended with an unfinished sentence:

“The person who changed the direction of the light was not…”

The lighthouse door was locked from the inside.

The radio had been disconnected.

Yet someone clearly wanted to make sure Arthur never finished that sentence.

Suspects

Clara Bell

“I was sorting through my father’s old logbooks on the ground floor. We argued because he refused to leave the lighthouse, but I never went upstairs.”

Clara was Arthur’s daughter. She wanted him to accept the government compensation and leave the lighthouse because she believed it was too dangerous to remain there.

Malcolm Reed

“I was in the harbor office dealing with rescue-fund documents all evening. Arthur was always suspicious of people, but I had no reason to hurt him.”

Malcolm was the head of the local harbor committee. Arthur had recently discovered that the rescue funds from the old shipwreck may have been stolen.

Thomas Vane

“I was repairing the backup generator outside the lighthouse. The storm was so loud that I could not hear what was happening inside.”

Thomas was an engineer responsible for lighthouse equipment. He understood the main lamp, the rotating lens, the radio, and the lighthouse’s maintenance structure.

Nora Finch

“I was writing my article in the nearby watch station. Arthur promised to give me the documents, but I never entered the lighthouse.”

Nora was an investigative journalist researching the shipwreck. She had publicly accused the harbor committee of hiding important evidence.

🔍Known Clues

1.The lantern-room door was locked from the inside, with the key in Arthur’s coat pocket, and the only window was tightly shut.

2.The main lamp was still burning, but the rotating lens had stopped facing the wrong direction. The mechanism stopped at 11:07, while the wall clock showed 11:15.

3.Arthur’s logbook contained the words: “The person who changed the direction of the light was not…”

4.The radio had been disconnected, yet the recording paper contained three fresh groups of Morse-code marks with perfectly identical intervals.

5.A short piece of red cord was caught in the brass gears, while a section of spare rope was missing from the ground floor and its broken end had fresh wax traces.

6.Sea salt and wet sand were found on the inside windowsill. There was only one set of wet footprints going up the stairs, with none leading down.

7.Black ink was found between Arthur’s fingers, and he held a brass harbor-committee seal in his left hand. A report about the old shipwreck had also been rebound in the harbor office.

8.Thomas claimed the backup generator had stopped before 11:00 PM, but its casing was still warm. Nora claimed she had never seen the logbook, yet her article draft contained the same unfinished sentence.

----- Previous answer (Room Seven at Sakurai Inn) -----

Culprit: Fujiwara

Motive: Fujiwara murdered Soichiro Sakurai after Soichiro refused to reveal the inn’s secret passage and family records. Fujiwara wanted to obtain the building plans and use the Yuki-Onna legend to conceal his crime.

Deduction Logic – The Hidden Passage:

The wet footprints began at Room Seven, where Fujiwara claimed he had never left. The family archive confirmed that an old passage connected Room Seven with the tea room, while the pages describing it had mysteriously disappeared.

Fine wood dust and torn red thread beneath the tea-room door showed that the passage had recently been used. The red thread found in Soichiro’s hand matched this trace, linking Fujiwara to the escape route. The almond-like smell suggested that poison, possibly cyanide, had been used.

Crime Reconstruction:

Fujiwara poisoned Soichiro’s drink and waited for the poison to take effect. He then entered the tea room through the hidden passage, arranged the scene, and escaped through the same route.

Before leaving, he scattered water to create false wet footprints from Room Seven to the tea-room door. The red maple leaf and the Yuki-Onna legend were planted to make the death appear supernatural. The locked door was part of the illusion: Fujiwara never needed to leave through it.

Conclusion:

The hidden passage, missing archive pages, false footprints, wood dust, torn red thread, and Fujiwara’s false alibi prove that he planned the murder and used the Yuki-Onna legend to disguise it.
