🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 12 of my new Tengu series. This will be inspired by the new release of Tengu in our game and incorporating his legend within the realm of Norheim.

His story will be roughly based on his historical legend with a twist from within the game we know and love.

I will be bringing 1 or 2 new episodes per week so stay tuned for more!

🔷 Recap Part 11: “Disturbance in the Wind”

Tengu senses a strange and unnatural presence within the forest, one that even the wind hesitates to approach. A mysterious voice reveals itself as a hidden force behind the conflict, watching him and hinting at something far greater than Cid.

🔷 Part 12: “Whispers in the Dark”

Night settled over the village with an uneasy stillness that no one spoke about directly. The fires along the shoreline burned lower than usual, and conversations faded earlier, as if the people could feel something watching from beyond the safety of the light. Doors were shut, windows covered, and even the sound of the waves seemed quieter than before.

Tengu did not return to rest.

He remained near the edge of the forest, standing where the trees met the open sand, his gaze fixed on the darkness beyond. The presence had not shown itself again, yet it had not left. He could still feel it faintly, like a distant pull woven into the air itself. The wind moved in uncertain patterns, brushing against the trees before pulling back toward him, as if unwilling to go further.

A soft set of footsteps approached from behind. The child stopped a short distance away, their voice steady despite the tension in the air.

“Is it still there?”

Tengu did not turn as he answered.

“Yes.”

There was a pause before the child spoke again, quieter this time.

“Is it like the man from before?”

Tengu’s eyes lowered slightly as the memory surfaced.

“No.”

That single word carried enough weight to end the questions. The child lingered for a moment longer, then stepped back toward the village, leaving Tengu alone once more with the forest.

For a time, nothing changed.

Then the wind shifted.

It moved past him without his command, slipping between the trees as though drawn forward. Tengu felt it stretch into the darkness, only for it to recoil suddenly, snapping back around him in tight, restless currents. The reaction was immediate and unnatural.

A whisper followed.

It did not come from one direction. It seemed to exist within the air itself.

“You hesitate.”

Tengu’s stance tightened, his focus sharpening as he scanned the forest.

“You should not,” the voice continued, calm and almost amused. “It is not in your nature.”

Images forced their way into his mind. The clearing. The uncontrolled surge of wind. The stillness that followed. He pushed the memory down, refusing to let it take hold.

“That was a mistake,” he said quietly.

There was a brief silence, then a soft, knowing response.

“Was it?”

The trees shifted without wind. Branches bent as though something moved between them, something that did not need to be seen to be felt. The motion circled him, never stepping fully into view.

“You speak of control now,” the voice went on, its tone light but edged with something deeper. “You speak of limits. Yet you do not understand what you hold.”

Tengu stepped forward, the wind tightening around him, no longer drifting but staying close as if seeking direction.

“Show yourself.”

The forest fell still.

Then something moved at the edge of his vision.

A shape, low and fluid, passed between the trees with unnatural grace. For a brief moment, pale light traced its outline before vanishing again. One tail followed, then another, then more, though none remained long enough to be counted.

The wind pressed tightly against him now, no longer calm. It held to him as if uncertain.

“You feel it now,” the voice whispered, suddenly closer.

Tengu turned sharply.

Nothing stood behind him.

Only the village, dimly lit by the remaining fires.

Then one flame went out.

Another followed, then another, each one fading without cause. No wind touched them. No hand moved. The light simply vanished, leaving darkness to spread slowly across the shoreline.

Tengu’s expression hardened as he watched it happen.

This was not an attack.

It was something far more controlled.

A presence that did not need force to cause harm.

The wind trembled around him, caught between obedience and something that felt dangerously close to fear.

For the first time, Tengu understood the difference between what he had faced before and what stood before him now.

This was not a storm to withstand.

It was something that could take everything apart without ever striking at all.

📄 Recap Questions

  1. How does the unseen presence demonstrate its power without directly confronting Tengu?
  2. What key difference does Tengu recognize between this threat and the enemies he has faced before?

🔷 Conclusion

The mysterious presence begins to influence the village in subtle but unsettling ways, extinguishing light and unsettling the wind itself. Tengu realizes that this new threat is far more dangerous than brute force, operating through control and manipulation rather than direct attack.

See you next week!
