🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 9 of my new Tengu series.  This will be inspired by the new release of Tengu in our game and incorporating his legend within the realm of Norheim.  His story will be roughly based on his historical legend with a twist from within the game we know and love.

I will be bringing 1 or 2 new episodes per week so stay tuned for more!

🔷 Recap Part 8:  “The Wind Can’t Be Everywhere ”

Tengu follows the fleeing villagers into the forest only to discover they’ve been captured and used as leverage in a carefully planned trap. When Cid arrives, it becomes clear this is no longer a battle of strength, but a calculated attempt to control Tengu by forcing him to fight with restraint.

🔷 Part 9:  “Unleashed Limits”

The blade pressed tighter against the fisherman’s throat.

A thin line of red formed where the edge touched skin.

Tengu saw it.

The wind around him trembled.

“Stay where you are,” the soldier warned again, his voice sharper now. The child cried louder as another soldier pulled him closer, gripping his shoulder too hard.

Tengu took a single step forward.

The reaction was immediate.

The blade began to draw.

Time seemed to slow as the fisherman’s eyes widened. The wind surged instinctively toward the man, but Tengu forced it back at the last instant. Not fast enough. Not precise enough.

A drop of blood fell.

That was all it took.

Something broke.

The air collapsed inward before exploding outward in a violent surge. The forest roared as the wind tore through the clearing, ripping leaves from branches and hurling them into a spiraling storm. The soldiers staggered, their formation shattering in an instant.

Tengu moved.

He was no longer stepping through the clearing. The wind carried him faster than sight. A soldier lifted his shield but it was ripped from his grasp and sent spinning into the trees. Another tried to thrust forward with his spear, but the weapon splintered before it could reach its mark.

The blade at the fisherman’s throat never had time to cut deeper.

The soldier holding it was thrown backward with crushing force, striking a tree hard enough to silence him instantly.

Tengu did not stop.

The storm intensified, no longer controlled, no longer narrow. It lashed through the circle with relentless force. Bodies were lifted and hurled aside. Shields cracked. Spears snapped. The ground itself seemed to tremble under the pressure of the wind.

A soldier tried to reach the child.

The air crushed inward around him, forcing him to the ground where he could not rise again.

The clearing became chaos.

At its center Tengu moved like the heart of the storm, striking without hesitation, without restraint. Every motion carried power that could not be pulled back once released.

Across the clearing Cid stood firm for a moment, watching.

Then the wind reached him.

He raised his blade, bracing as the force slammed into him. The ground beneath his feet gave way slightly as he fought to hold his position. For the first time his composure shifted.

Tengu appeared before him.

There was no pause. No exchange. No test.

The wind struck with full force.

Cid was lifted from the ground and thrown back through the trees, vanishing into the forest beyond with a force that broke branches in his wake.

Silence followed.

Not immediately.

The wind raged for several long seconds more, tearing through what remained of the soldiers, scattering them until none could stand.

Then it stopped.

The forest fell still.

Leaves drifted slowly back to the ground. Broken branches creaked as they settled. The air felt empty where the storm had been.

Tengu stood alone in the clearing.

The villagers remained where they had been forced to kneel. Their bindings had been torn away in the chaos. None of them spoke.

The fisherman touched his throat, his hand shaking as he felt the shallow cut.

The child clung to the woman beside him, wide-eyed and silent now.

They were safe.

Tengu looked around the clearing.

The soldiers were no longer a threat.

Most did not move at all.

The wind stirred faintly at his feet, weaker now, uncertain.

This was not what he had intended.

He had saved them.

But the force he had used had not been measured. It had not been controlled.

For a long moment he said nothing. Did nothing.

Then he turned away from the villagers.

Without a word, he stepped back into the trees.

The forest closed around him as he moved deeper into the shadows, leaving the clearing behind.

The wind did not follow him this time.

It lingered in the silence he left behind.

  1. 📄 Recap Questions
  2. What moment caused Tengu to lose control and abandon his restraint in the clearing?
  3. How did Tengu’s overwhelming use of power change both the outcome of the battle and his own state of mind?

🔷 Conclusion

Tengu saved the villagers, but the cost of that victory weighed heavily on him as he walked away from the destruction he caused. The wind that once obeyed him without question now carried a quiet uncertainty, leaving his path forward unclear.

See you next week!
