🏊 Who commited the murder? Only the river knows 🏊

📕Story Background
It was a stormy night. The town lay silent under the pounding rain and rolling thunder. Most houses were dark; only a few dim streetlights flickered weakly through the downpour. Inside the police station, however, the lights were still on. Chief Goss and several officers sat waiting by the phone — they all knew too well that on nights like this, trouble always found its way.
Sure enough, the phone suddenly rang. A man’s trembling voice came through:
“Is this the police station? S-something terrible has happened! I—I found… a body by the river!”
Without hesitation, Goss grabbed two officers and sped into the rain.
At the riverbank, their headlights caught a lone figure — a tall, thin man, completely drenched from head to toe. His face was pale and his voice shaky. Goss patted him on the shoulder, calming him down before crouching to examine the body.
After a moment, the man began explaining:
“I was walking by the river when I slipped and fell in. Luckily, I can swim. When I crawled back to shore, I tripped over something… and realized it was a corpse! I was terrified. I struck a match to take a closer look — the man’s neck was slashed twice, and he was covered in blood. I ran straight to the phone booth to call you.”
Before the officers could ask more, Chief Goss suddenly said firmly,
“No need to question further. Arrest him — he’s our killer.”
Why did Chief Goss immediately suspect that the man who reported the crime was actually the murderer?
(This story is absolutely fictional. Any inconsistencies with common sense work for the plot)

----- Previous answer (Curtain Call for Cook) -------
Correct Answer: Glass all over the floor
By comparing inconsistencies, the police spotted the flaw in Cook’s story. He claimed that before drinking he had drawn all the curtains, which means the curtains should have been closed when the burglar “broke the window.”
But the room was strewn with glass shards, indicating the pane shattered and the fragments flew unobstructed into the room—something that wouldn’t happen if a curtain had been hanging behind the glass to block them. The two facts contradict each other.
Therefore, Cook was lying—at the very least, the curtains were not closed before the incident. As for why he lied, that would require further investigation.
