🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part five of my new series starring the newest immortal, Ares! He is commonly known as “the god of war,” but how did he get this title, and what path was he on? These are all the things I will dream up in this new Olympic series filled with all of our favorite gods.

🔷 Recap of part 4: "Trial of Thebes

In the ruins of Thebes, Athena challenges Ares to save a band of survivors not through battle but through persuasion, testing his ability to wield words instead of weapons. Faced with their fear and despair, Ares steps forward to ignite their will to stand together and fight for survival.

🔷 Part 5:  "The Boy with the Spear"

The survivors shifted uneasily as Ares’s voice carried across the square. A thin boy, no older than sixteen, pushed to the front. His hair was matted, his frame sharp with hunger, but his eyes burned with a heat the others lacked. He lifted a rusted spear, not in attack but in accusation.

“You dare speak of living?” The boy spat. “Where were you when Thebes burned? Where were you when our fathers fell in the streets and our mothers were dragged away?” His voice cracked but did not waver. “The gods watched, and the gods did nothing.”

The fire hissed, and no one else spoke. The boy’s challenge was more than his own anger; it was the truth everyone here carried in silence. They wanted an answer.

Ares looked at him, and for the first time in longer than he could remember, he did not reach for rage. He let the weight of the boy’s words press into him.

“You are right,” Ares said. “I was not here when your walls fell. I was not at your gates when the blood ran in the streets. I am not your savior.” He stepped closer, his shadow cutting across the firelight. “I am your witness.”

The boy’s grip on the spear trembled, but his jaw stayed locked.

“You think the gods do nothing,” Ares went on. “But I tell you this: war is not in Olympus, and it is not in the sky. It is in you. In every breath you take after loss, in every step you take when fear tries to root you to the ground. It is the choice to fight when the world has already written you off.”

The boy blinked, his anger faltering for just a moment. Ares seized it.

“I have seen soldiers break and cities burn. I have seen men curse the heavens, and I have seen women bury their children and still rise to face the day after. Do you think that is the work of gods? No. That is the work of people who decide they are not done yet.”

A murmur rippled through the group. Some lowered their makeshift weapons. Others stared at Ares as if weighing him against the ruins around them.

The boy lowered his spear by an inch. “And if we fight tomorrow and die?” he asked, voice quieter now.

“Then you die standing,” Ares said without hesitation. “Not as prey, not as shadows hiding in the bones of a dead city. You face them as Thebans. And maybe, just maybe, you live. But that choice—whether you meet death crawling or meet it with steel in your hand—that is yours. Not mine.”

The fire popped. The silence stretched. Then an older woman near the edge of the circle straightened. Her face was lined with grief, but her chin lifted.

“My son was cut down at the gates,” she said. “He fought so others could flee. If he had the strength, so do we.”

The boy looked at her, then at the others. His shoulders sagged, the fight draining out of him. Slowly, he nodded and lowered the spear fully.

Ares felt the shift. It was not victory, not yet. But it was the first crack in the wall of despair. And through that crack, light might enter.

📄 Recap Questions

How does the young survivor’s challenge force Ares to confront the failures of the gods?

What shift occurs among the survivors after Ares responds with honesty instead of rage?

🔷 Conclusion

Ares did not win them with threats or glory but by giving their pain a voice and showing them that strength was still theirs to claim. For the first time since Thebes fell, the survivors began to imagine standing together instead of waiting to die.
