🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part four of my new series starring the newest immortal, Ares! He is commonly known as “the god of war,” but how did he get this title, and what path was he on? These are all the things I will dream up in this new Olympic series filled with all of our favorite gods.
🔷 Recap of part 3: "Shape of Fear”
Ares discovers that his son Phobos is orchestrating fear to deliberately corrupt and dismantle the structure of war itself. Realizing brute strength won’t be enough, he seeks Athena’s help to restore balance and purpose to conflict.
🔷 Part 4: "Trial of Thebes"
The ruins of Thebes were not quiet. Even in death, the city seemed to remember the sound of spears on shields and the cries carried by the wind. Stones lay scattered like the bones of some giant creature, and weeds crept up through the streets as if trying to stitch the place shut.
Ares arrived first. He stood where the gates had once been, hands at his sides, letting the ghosts come to him. They did not speak in words but in sensations: the heat of battle, the sharp stink of fear, and the crack of walls falling. It was the kind of silence he understood.
Athena came at moonrise, her steps soft against the broken road. She wore no armor, only a simple cloak, but her presence felt sharper than any blade.
“You are early,” she said.
“I do not like waiting,” Ares replied.
“That will be your first problem.” She walked past him into the heart of the ruins. “If you want my help, you will pass a trial.”
“I have fought a thousand trials,” Ares said, following.
“This one will be different,” she said without looking back. “You will not fight. Not with your hands. Not with your sword. You will win or lose by thought alone.”
He almost laughed. “That is your way, not mine.”
“Exactly,” Athena said. “If Phobos is turning war into something formless, then you must prove you can give it shape again without striking a single blow. If you cannot, you will fail before you begin.”
She stopped in what had once been the city’s main square. In the dim light, a small camp of survivors huddled near a fire. Their faces were drawn and hollow, their eyes shifting like animals ready to bolt.
“They have been here since the sack,” Athena said quietly. “Too afraid to leave, too angry to trust. They argue over scraps. The strongest take what they want. Tomorrow, a band of raiders will come through. If these people stand together, they can drive them off. If they break, they will be slaughtered.”
“And you want me to train them?”
“No,” she said. “You will convince them to fight for each other. No orders. No threats. No show of force. Just words.”
Ares frowned. “Words are not my weapon.”
“They will have to be,” Athena said. “I will return when the moon has set. By then, either they will be ready to stand or they will be lost.”
She left him there, and for a long moment Ares simply watched the firelight flicker over the survivors’ faces. He recognized the look in their eyes. It was not the readiness for battle but the resignation before it. They had already seen themselves lose.
He thought of Phobos, of the siege in the East and the revolt that had rotted from within. This was the same battlefield, only smaller. If he could not change it here, he would never change it anywhere.
He stepped into the firelight. The survivors fell silent, wary, some clutching makeshift weapons.
“My name is Ares,” he said. “I have seen cities fall. I have seen people broken. But I have also seen the moment when men and women stop waiting to die and decide to live.”
No one moved.
“Tonight,” he said, “you choose which one you will be.”
📄 Recap Questions
Why does Athena insist that Ares must win this trial without using weapons or physical force?
What does Ares realize about the survivors’ state of mind when he first approaches their campfire?
🔷 Conclusion
In the ruins of Thebes, Ares faces a challenge unlike any he has known: to unite the broken and fearful without the aid of sword or shield. If he succeeds, he will prove that he can fight Phobos not only on the field of battle but also in the realm of the mind, where fear is born and shaped.
See you next week!
