🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 45 of my Wukong series. We are following three famous fire immortals and their ally Wukong, who is currently training in the arts of fire. They have had a challenging journey as of late, and their adventure is constantly changing with new challenges just beyond the horizon. This is part of a special collaboration with my other story. Please read Leonida’s Quest part 18 before you read this story if you want to keep the story lines intact.

📄 Recap of Part 44:  "Oracle’s Silence"

Leonidas and Wukong climb to the Oracle and learn that trolls were once brutalized and bound by ancient rulers, and the shaman is merely releasing them, forcing a grim choice between defending their homeland or ending the cycle of oppression. Realizing their people won’t follow if they reveal the trolls’ victimhood, they resolve to share only the part of the truth that will keep morale intact and begin their descent with a new story to lead.

🔷 Part 45:  "Foxfire and Secrets"

Wukong burst into the war room just after sunrise, breath fogging in the cold air. The others were still gathered around the map, trying to determine which routes Ninetails might have taken. The tension from the night before still hung heavy.

"I'm going after her," he said, already strapping on his gauntlets.

Theron stepped forward. "We don't even know where she—"

"I do," Wukong cut in. "She wouldn't just disappear unless it mattered. And she wouldn't run unless she planned to finish something. Alone."

Seondeok narrowed her eyes. "Even if you're right, you won't reach her in time."

"I'm the fastest of all of us. If there's even a chance she needs help, I have to try."

He didn’t wait for approval. With a blur of movement and a crack of wind, Wukong vanished from the hall and into the mountains.

The climb was brutal. Ice clung to the narrow switchbacks, and the air thinned quickly, burning in his lungs. But Wukong pushed higher, following broken traces of fox tracks and scorched frost. The sky dimmed as he ascended, and the magic in the air changed. He could feel it dying, the wards that once pulsed with troll sorcery now flickering out one by one.

When he reached the ridge overlooking the valley, he stopped cold.

Below him, chaos had turned to stillness.

Trolls lay scattered across the frozen basin, some collapsed in heaps, others frozen mid-charge, mouths open in silent roars. Shattered totems smoked gently in the snow, their runes dark and useless. In the center stood Ninetails, surrounded by a ghostly light. Her nine tails flowed behind her like wind in water, each one alive with foxfire that painted the air in gold and violet.

The troll shaman remained upright, but only barely. His staff had been reduced to splinters. His eyes flicked around, dazed, as if he didn't even understand what had happened.

Wukong took a step forward, stunned. He had been too late to fight but just in time to witness something no history book had ever recorded. The sheer force of it held him still.

Ninetails raised one paw. The last of the foxfire gathered, dancing like stars around her tails, and then scattered into the wind. The trolls who still stood dropped their weapons and collapsed into the snow, broken but alive.

She didn’t look at him until she was certain the last threat was gone.

He approached slowly. “That was not a rescue mission.”

Ninetails looked calm as she transformed back into her human form.

“No. It was a message.”

Wukong glanced around the battlefield. “You dismantled their entire spellcraft. I’ve seen gods with less control.”

She walked past one of the fallen shaman guards and picked up a broken charm. It crumbled in her hand.

“This was only a vanguard. A small piece of what’s coming. They’re awakening more than old magic. They’re awakening memories.”

Wukong turned to her, eyes still wide. “The others need to know what you can do. They’ll trust you. Follow you.”

She met his gaze. “Or they’ll fear me. Worship me. Use me. What you saw here cannot be shared.”

His mouth opened slightly, then closed. He forced his eyes away from her still-glowing tails.

“You’re asking me to lie.”

“I’m asking you to protect something fragile. If the world isn’t ready for truth, then protect the piece of it that still wants to fight for a better one.”

He nodded slowly. “You could have ruled us all. You still could.”

Ninetails turned toward the trail back to Sparta. “That’s not the story I want.”

They walked in silence. Wukong, for the first time in a long while, was unsure of what to say. But in his heart, he knew he had just seen something that would change the tide of the coming war. And he also knew he might never see anything like it again.

📄 Recap Questions

Why does Ninetails not want her true form to be revealed?

Wukong is now holding multiple secrets. What will he now say when they return to Sparta?

🔷 Conclusion

Wukong and his new Spartan friends have quite complicated lives full of secrets and war. Yet another secret has been added to Wukong’s heart that he must now bury deep, as the goddess is not one to be messed with, as he now knows. There is something much deeper, and it seems they are only now scratching the surface.
