🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 43 of my Wukong series. This is a special chapter that is working in harmony with my Leonidas Quest.
If you are following both stories, please read part 16 before this story! We are following three famous fire immortals and their ally Wukong, who is currently training in the arts of fire. They have had a challenging journey as of late, and their adventure is constantly changing with new challenges just beyond the horizon.
📄 Recap of Part 42: "Beneath the Stone Sky"
Captured by a shaman draining their powers through ancient runes, Seondeok and her allies break free by severing their magical connections, disrupting the ritual, and escaping a collapsing cave. Though they emerge weakened, they survive with the knowledge of a growing threat and the resolve to return stronger.
🔷 Part 43: "The Cave and the Crown"
The sun was sinking behind the hills when Seondeok and the others reached the outskirts of a small village. Smoke curled lazily from chimneys, and the sound of children playing echoed faintly through the warm evening air. They looked ragged and dirt-covered, their pace slow after the long escape from the cave.
A shepherd boy spotted them first and sprinted back into town, shouting about strangers on the road. Within minutes, a small group of villagers had gathered, watching with wary eyes until an older man stepped forward. He was broad-shouldered, with a slight limp and a scar across his brow that marked him as someone who had once known war.
"You four look like you've walked out of a grave," he said, arms crossed. "Trouble behind you?"
"More than you can imagine," Wukong replied.
That was enough for the man. He nodded once. "Name’s Mikon. I’ll give you a place to rest. But if you're headed for the capital, you’ll want to move quickly. The world’s shifting faster than most realize."
Over a simple meal of stew and bread, they explained just enough to make Mikon's eyes narrow with concern. When they spoke of the shaman and the power he drew from the earth, Mikon swore under his breath.
"Then it's as bad as the old tales say," he muttered. "I’ll take you to the capital at first light, but you should know: the king and queen aren’t there. Leonidas and Thalia rode out three days ago to face the trolls in the mountain pass. Most of the council was against it, but they went anyway. Said waiting meant losing more than they could afford."
Wukong set down his bowl. "Then who commands now?"
"Commander Theron. Veteran of the eastern wars. He’s cautious but not blind. He’ll hear you out."
The journey to the capital took most of the next day. Spartan banners waved from stone towers, and the heavy gates groaned open as Mikon led them in. Soldiers nodded respectfully as the group passed, eyes lingering on the strangers with curiosity.
Inside the central hall, Commander Theron stood hunched over a massive war map, lines and markers spread across it like a game of fate. He looked up as they entered, his gaze sharp and unreadable.
Mikon spoke first. "These four... they’ve seen what’s coming. You’ll want to hear this."
Theron listened closely as Wukong recounted their escape and the twisted magic they’d encountered underground. The commander's expression grew darker with every detail.
"We knew the trolls were changing," he said finally. "But we didn’t know how. Not like this. If the shaman is empowering them with stolen magic, we may be fighting more than brute strength."
"We're here to help," Wukong said. "Whatever you need."
Theron gave a slow nod. "Then maybe the tide hasn't turned just yet."
A horn sounded then, deep and low. The air shifted. People outside began to murmur.
Theron moved quickly to the balcony. "It’s the forward company. The army is returning."
"But it’s only been three days," Seondeok said.
Together they hurried outside, just in time to see the dust of the road rising. Spartan soldiers marched through the gates, tired and wounded but upright. And at the front rode Leonidas, streaked with ash and blood, his eyes scanning the crowd.
They stopped when their eyes met Wukong’s.
Wukong stepped forward. Leonidas dismounted and crossed to him, extending a hand.
"You don't look like a Spartan," he said.
"No," Wukong replied, gripping his hand firmly. "But I think we have the same enemies."
Later that night, as fires crackled and the scent of meat drifted through the air, the two groups sat around a central blaze. Words were exchanged, names shared, and truths laid bare. The world was shifting, and the gods had gone quiet. But between warriors and strangers, a plan began to form. One that might yet stand against the darkness.
📄 Recap Questions
Will this new encounter change the course of the war?
How will Wukong and his friends be able to help King Leonidas?
🔷 Conclusion
Wukong and his friends have gotten themselves out of a mess once again. They are finally on a path that could bring them to help being part of a massive victory on Norheim rather than constantly being on side quests with no aim or direction.
See you next week!
