🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 37 of my Wukong series. We are following three famous fire immortals and their ally Wukong, who is currently training in the arts of fire. They have had a challenging journey as of late, and their adventure is only going to get harder with new enemies hiding in the shadows.
📄 Recap of Part 36: “Unleashing the Flame”
After emerging from the Golden Waters, the four immortals—Wukong, Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta—unlock powerful new abilities, each one mastering their unique strength with awe-inspiring displays. But as they revel in their transformation, a shadowy figure appears on the horizon, reminding them that a greater threat—Tut—still looms ahead.
🔷 Part 37: "The Illusion of Triumph"
The hunt began with the first light of dawn, and the fire never left their veins.
For five days, Wukong, Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta pursued the shadow of Tut across scorched plains, dense jungles, and the crumbling ruins of ancient cities. Each sunrise found them already in motion, their eyes scanning the horizon, their powers fueling their tireless pursuit. They no longer needed rest like mortals. The Golden Waters had changed them—hardened them, sharpened them, and set their souls ablaze with purpose.
Tut was always one step ahead. A whisper here, a burned trail there. A flicker of movement vanishing into the distance. But he couldn’t hide forever.
“We’re gaining on him,” Seondeok muttered one night, kneeling in the dirt beside a series of melted footprints. “He’s starting to slip.”
“Good,” Hippolyta said through gritted teeth, cracking her knuckles. “I’m ready to end this.”
Wukong nodded. “Tomorrow. We will finish this.”
And on the fifth day, as the sun climbed to its peak, they found him.
Tut stood in a broken valley of black stone and bone, the sky above churning with dark clouds. He waited in silence, his form wreathed in shadow, tall and terrible. But he did not flee this time. Perhaps he was ready for the fight. Or perhaps he had no choice.
“Now!” Wukong shouted, and they struck.
The assault was blinding.
Hippolyta charged first, her fist slamming into the ground beneath Tut’s feet, sending shockwaves that cracked the earth. Wukong followed, his staff a blur of blazing motion, striking from all sides with overwhelming speed and fury.
Seondeok took position high on a ridge, arrows flying with divine precision, each one glowing with the energy of the Golden Waters. They struck Tut’s form and exploded in bursts of radiant light, forcing him to stagger.
But it was Wu who burned the brightest.
He leapt into the air, flames trailing from his limbs like the tail of a comet. Fire exploded from his palms, relentless torrents that hammered down upon Tut. The shadowy figure tried to shield himself, but Wu’s power had evolved—hotter, purer, and more destructive than ever before.
“You don’t run from us again!” Wu roared, summoning every ounce of his energy into a single blazing orb. The fireball crackled with unbearable heat, the ground beneath him turning to molten glass.
With a roar, he hurled it straight into Tut’s chest.
The explosion was monumental.
Flames engulfed the shadowy figure, his body contorting in silent agony as the fire devoured him. His form twisted and melted, consumed by Wu’s inferno. Within moments, nothing remained but scorched stone and drifting embers.
The four stood in silence, their breaths heavy but triumphant.
“We did it,” Hippolyta said, a rare grin spreading across her face.
Wukong spun his staff and rested it on his shoulder. “Finally.”
But Seondeok’s smile faded first. She stepped closer to the smoldering remains, her sharp eyes narrowing.
“This… isn’t him.”
They all turned to look.
Where the shadow had burned, there was no body—no ash, no bones. Just darkness, seeping slowly into the earth like spilled ink.
Wu’s flames flickered. “What do you mean?”
“It wasn’t him,” Seondeok said grimly. “We destroyed a clone… a shadow.”
The silence that followed was heavier than any battle.
Their most powerful attacks had done nothing.
Tut was still out there.
And he knew exactly what they were capable of.
📄 Recap Questions
They can feel their new power, but will they be able to outsmart this tricky opponent?
What limits do they have now that they can push themselves much further beyond anything they have ever done before?
🔷 Conclusion
Wukong and his friends have pursued their enemy to the ends of the earth just to find out they had been tricked and outsmarted. They will need to figure out a plan to defeat this elusive enemy or end up chasing him around forever.
See you next week!
