🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part 32 of my Wukong series. We are following three famous fire immortals and their ally Wukong, who is currently training in the arts of fire. They have had a tough journey as of late, and their adventure is only going to get harder.
📄 Recap of Part 31: “The Curse of Tut”
The warriors face an ancient, overwhelming force embodied by Tut, a shadowed pharaoh whose power warps reality and defies brute strength. Though battered and shaken, they realize the battle has only begun—and victory may demand more than they can afford to lose.
🔷 Part 32: “Broken Plan”
The warriors regrouped in the shelter of a crumbling temple, their breaths still ragged from the last battle. The air was thick with the acrid scent of scorched stone and shadows that refused to disperse. Hippolyta leaned against a broken pillar, her sword resting across her knees.
“We need a plan,” she said, her voice low but steady. “We can’t charge in blind again. Tut’s toying with us—we need to strike together, united.”
Seondeok nodded, her bow resting in her lap as she carefully checked her arrows. “Agreed. We’ve seen what he can do. Splitting up is a death sentence. We fight as one.”
Wu glanced between them, her expression tense but resolute. “I’m with you. Together, we’re stronger. He won’t break us if we hold the line.”
Wukong paced restlessly, his staff tapping against the stone floor. His tail flicked behind him, a sure sign of his mounting frustration. “No. We’re wasting time. He’s a coward hiding in the dark. Let me go ahead—I’ll draw him out. You three come in when he’s focused on me. It’s the only way.”
Hippolyta’s eyes narrowed. “That’s reckless. He’s too powerful for you to take on alone.”
“Reckless is sitting here while he gets further away!” Wukong shot back. “I’m faster than all of you. I can dodge his tricks. He won’t see me coming.”
Wu stepped forward. “We stay together, Wukong. If you go in alone, you’ll get yourself killed.”
Wukong scoffed. “You’re wrong. I won’t die—I’ll give you the shot you need. Trust me.”
Hippolyta’s voice hardened. “We trust you. That’s why we want you with us.”
Wukong shook his head, his jaw tight. “You’ll just slow me down.” He turned away, his voice quieter but still laced with defiance. “I’m not asking permission. I’ll see you at the end.”
Before any of them could stop him, he vaulted over the temple wall and disappeared into the shadows.
Seondeok cursed under her breath. “Damn him.”
“We move now,” Hippolyta said grimly. “Stick to the plan. Together.”
They didn’t stop to rest again. The trail was faint, but Tut’s presence stained the world around them, leaving a bitter, oppressive weight in the air. They followed the darkness deeper into the ruins, where the air seemed to hum with unnatural energy.
When they found Wukong again, he was perched above a clearing, hidden in the rafters of a ruined council hall. Below, Tut stood in the center, his shadowed form flickering like a flame in the wind.
Wukong grinned. “Got you now.” He lunged, his staff spinning.
The blow passed through Tut’s head as though he were smoke.
The illusion dissolved, and the real Tut emerged from the shadows behind the others.
“Fools,” Tut’s voice echoed coldly. “You should have stayed together.”
Dark tendrils lashed out, wrapping around Wu, Seondeok, and Hippolyta, dragging them to the ground.
Wukong’s eyes widened in horror. “No!”
The last thing he saw was Tut’s cruel smile as the shadows closed in around his friends.
📄 Recap Questions
Why was Wukong so adamant to go against the group and flank?
How much danger are they in after getting caught off guard in a moment of conflict between each other?
🔷 Conclusion
Our heroes have made many mistakes over their journey together and have always figured out a way to overcome them, but this feels different. They were unable to find a solution together in the pressure of the moment, and now it is massively biting them.
We don’t know how bad this could get or what will happen to our exposed heroes now that they are split in a battle unlike one they have ever faced!
See you next week!
