"Oath of Deception" [Part 7] A King's Quest - An Infinity Kingdom Story

🔷 Introduction

Welcome to Part 7 of the King Quest, where we are following a historic figure of Arthur.

This story is different in that he has magical power and is struggling with his destiny and the darkness that is so tempting. He must battle his urge for power or be consumed by it, which would put into question his rule. 

📄 Recap of Part 6: “Embrace the Dark”

In this story, Arthur grapples with the intoxicating power bestowed upon him by Morgana, which fuels both his ambition and his temper. During a hunting expedition, his behavior shifts from that of a noble prince to that of a force of nature as he unleashes magic against a swarm of goblins, leaving his knights in awe and fear.

As he revels in his newfound abilities, the knights realize that the man they once knew is becoming increasingly cloaked in darkness, leaving them uncertain about how to protect him from the very power that could ultimately consume him.

🔷 Part 7: “Oath of Deception”

As the hunting party returned to Camelot, the once-bright sun now seemed to cast long shadows, mirroring the gloom that settled over the knights. Arthur sensed the weight of their silence; the thrill of victory had faded, replaced by unease about what they had witnessed in the woods. He needed to restore their spirits and regain their trust.

“Let’s gather at the tavern tonight,” Arthur suggested, his voice attempting to project cheerfulness. “We’ll drink and celebrate our survival!” The knights exchanged glances, unsure, but Arthur pressed on. “It will do us all good to let loose for a night. You’ve all earned it.”

As they entered the tavern, laughter and music filled the air, but Arthur’s heart remained heavy. He watched as the knights engaged with the patrons, their laughter forced and hollow. He knew this night was merely a distraction from the unease that loomed like a storm cloud. Deep down, he felt the gnawing realization that he needed to earn their trust not just through revelry but through a deeper bond.

In the days that followed, Arthur called for a training session. The knights assembled in the courtyard, their expressions betraying the lingering apprehension from the encounter with the goblins. Arthur took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was to come.

“Brothers,” he began, his voice steady but commanding. “Today, we forge a new bond. A pact that will unite us in strength and loyalty.” He felt Morgana’s presence in the back of his mind, urging him to seal this pact with deception. “I pledge my allegiance to each of you, and in return, I ask for your loyalty to me. Together, we will stand as one against any threat.”

The knights despite their reservations nodded in agreement. Arthur could sense their reluctance, but the promise of camaraderie and strength was too enticing to resist. “We will train harder than ever, fight harder than ever, and in doing so, we will become legends,” he proclaimed, driven by the intoxicating whispers of power that Morgana had planted in his mind.

With each knight who stepped forward to join him, Arthur felt the bond grow tighter, but beneath that exhilaration lay the dark truth—this pact was forged in deception, fueled by the influence of Morgana. The air crackled with an unsettling energy as they clasped hands, sealing their oath.

Days turned into weeks, and while the knights trained under Arthur’s command, a subtle shift began to occur. They became more obedient, more reliant on his decisions, and Arthur reveled in the sense of control. Yet each night, as he lay in his chambers, the weight of his choices pressed down on him, the flickering doubts returning with a vengeance.

Morgana’s voice echoed in his mind, soothing yet sinister. “You are stronger than they know, Arthur. Embrace this power. The bond you’ve created will ensure your reign. They will follow you into darkness, and together, you will achieve greatness.”

Arthur wrestled with the allure of her words, torn between the need to protect his knights and the growing hunger for power that threatened to consume him. He had forged a bond meant to solidify his rule, yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had sown the seeds of a greater conflict.

The weeks passed, and with each training session, Arthur's mastery of magic and manipulation grew, but so did the uncertainty among his knights. They had pledged their loyalty to him, yet shadows danced in their eyes as they began to question whether this path would lead to salvation or ruin. And all the while, Arthur’s grip on his own darkness tightened as he continued down the perilous path laid out before him. The true cost of his ambition loomed ever closer, a storm on the horizon waiting to unleash its fury.
