🔷 Introduction

Welcome to part 13 of my new Medusa series.  This will be inspired by the new release of Medusa in our game and incorporating her legend within the realm of Norheim.  I will be bringing 1 or 2 new episodes per week so stay tuned for more!

🔷 Part 12 Recap: "When the Crown Takes Notice

Alexander and Medusa are formally approached by the Kingdom, which frames them as valuable assets and offers protection only if they submit to separation and control. By refusing together, they are quietly reclassified as a threat, setting larger forces in motion without a single blow being struck.

🔷 Part 13:  "What Closeness Costs”

Sleep did not come cleanly.

Alexander dreamed of Norheim as it had been before banners and borders. Fields without markers. Roads that curved because they wished to. He stood alone at first, shield planted at his feet, the ground warm beneath his boots.

Then he felt it.

Fear, sharp and sudden, not his own.

He turned and the field hardened into stone mid-breath. Grass froze upright. Birds became statues suspended in air. The fear intensified, tangled with guilt and restraint, and Alexander staggered as if struck.

He woke with a gasp, hand clutching his chest.

Across the fire, Medusa sat upright, eyes wide, serpents rigid. Her breath came shallow, controlled with effort.

“You felt that too,” he said.

She nodded once. “Your dream pulled me into it.”

They sat in silence as dawn thinned the dark. Neither reached for comfort. Both understood the weight of what had happened.

As they broke camp, the changes became harder to ignore.

Alexander scraped his knuckle on a stone while lifting his pack. The cut burned sharply, then faded. Across from him, Medusa hissed softly and pressed her fingers to the same place on her hand, skin already healing.

They stared at each other.

“That has never happened before,” she said.

Later, when Medusa grew tense at the edge of the treeline, Alexander felt the warning bloom in his chest seconds before she spoke. Not sight. Not sound. Emotion, raw and unfiltered.

Something was leaking between them.

By midday, they stopped near a ruined watch post swallowed by ivy. Medusa knelt beside a fallen pillar, her gaze careful. The stone did not stiffen beneath her eyes. Instead, faint lines traced outward like veins responding to touch.

She recoiled.

“My curse is… listening,” she said quietly. “Not obeying. Responding.”

Alexander rested his shield against the stone. The metal hummed, low and steady, as if answering a call it had forgotten. He pulled his hand back, unsettled.

“This isn’t just closeness,” he said. “It’s alignment.”

They shared water in silence. Thoughts pressed close without words. Doubt. Resolve. Fear layered beneath both.

Medusa finally spoke. “The bond is deepening because we chose it freely.”

“And because we are being hunted,” Alexander added.

She did not argue.

They tested distance as the sun dipped. Medusa walked ahead, then farther, until the thread between them stretched thin. Alexander felt it then, a pressure behind the eyes, a quiet wrongness like a note played off key.

Medusa swayed.

“Enough,” she said, turning back. “Separation hurts now.”

When she returned to his side, the pressure eased. Relief washed through both of them at once, too strong to be coincidence.

Alexander exhaled slowly. “There may come a point where distance is no longer an option.”

Medusa met his gaze. “Then we must decide what we become before others decide for us.”

Night fell early. As they rested, shared dreams returned, clearer this time. Visions of wardens bound to land, of bonds forged to protect rather than rule. Of sacrifices made willingly, and others taken by force.

When Alexander woke, his fear lingered in the air between them.

Medusa felt it and did not look away.

“The Kingdom will try to exploit this,” she said.

“Yes,” Alexander replied. “But so will the land.”

They sat together as the fire burned low, aware now that every choice pulled tighter threads they could no longer cut without consequence.

The bond was no longer forming.

It was taking shape.

📄 Recap Questions

How does the growing bond between Alexander and Medusa begin to affect their bodies, emotions, and control over their powers?

Why does distance itself become a new danger, and what does that imply about their future choices?

🔷 Conclusion

Alexander and Medusa come to understand that their bond is no longer symbolic but structural, shaping how they feel, heal, and survive. Whatever comes next, separation is no longer a safeguard, but a fracture neither of them can afford.
