💠Introduction

What’s up, folks? Welcome back to my Illusion Battlefield League(IBL) series, where I take a closer look at different matches. The IBL tournament differs from regular IB in that everyone will construct marches and skill builds using a fixed set of skills. At different stages of the tournament, more immortals and skills will become available. Everyone has access to the same immortals and the same skills. Castle skins and Lord Talents do not affect the more fast-paced battles of IBL. Relocations and marching speed are also faster. The event is one of the most entertaining events in Infinity Kingdom, and players enjoy spectating, almost like a sporting event. In this article, I’m going to take a closer look at the first playoff match between Server 73’s The Arcane(ARC) and Server 277’s Watch It Burn(WIB). ARC’s positions in this match will be denoted in green while WIB’s will be in red.

💠Overview

ARC was ranked 10th in Season 6 and is made up of ARC and PRD players who were ranked 3rd. They’re a contender and could give any team a run for their money on any given day. They entered the playoffs having won all eight of their matches, albeit two of them were given to them for free by their farm alliance, and largely haven’t been challenged. Their most impressive win was against VT when they had half as many players. WIB was ranked 45th in Season 6. Even within the middle tier of alliances, they are still a middle-of-the-pack team. They entered the Group Elimination stage with a 6-2 record, losing to JLA and AFF. Most of their wins came from inexperienced and young servers. Both teams are able to field around the same number of players, but ARC should be the heavy favorites.

💠Starting Positions and Talents

ARC

  • Started with 22 players and ended with 26
  • 10 Attack talents
  • 12 Defense talents
  • 0 Support talents

WIB

  • Started with 21 players and ended with 27
  • 7 Attack talents
  • 12 Defense talents
  • 2 Support talents

💠Tower 1

Both teams sent six players to Tower 1. ARC had better edge spawns, so I thought they gave too much space to WIB and conceded the bottom corner spot. ARC could have blocked it and been up one member at the objective. Both teams had three players adjacent to the tower. Neither had overwhelming control around the tower, so it would come down to solo attacks, rallies, and garrisons. Solo attacks are more favored in playoffs because certain marches counter others, and rallies are not as quick.

💠Tower 4

ARC sent seven players to Tower 4 and WIB sent six. ARC didn’t have many good edge spawns they could use to block WIB’s relocations, so they decided to relocate in a standard formation. WIB tried to move one player to block ARC’s relocation on their side of the tower, but ARC would always be quicker. As the bottom-sided and generally weaker team, WIB would have been better off only contesting two towers.

💠Central Tower

ARC sent five players to the Central Tower, and WIB sent seven. I thought ARC undercommitted at the center and should have had more players there. They could have given up Tower 1 instead of contesting all three objectives. WIB had two more players at the tower, so they should have the advantage.

💠Altars

Neither team sent anyone to either altar.

💠Home Towers

Both teams stationed two guards at their respective home towers.

💠Play-by-Play

At Tower 1, ARC immediately started hammering a single target with a barrage of solo attacks and reduced his prosperity to under half, while WIB was so focused on sending rallies. A couple of their rallies failed to break through their targets’ defenses, too, so it ended up being a waste of time. WIB managed to zero one ARC member who forgot to garrison himself. ARC managed to nearly capture the tower before WIB stopped it with less than 30 seconds to go. Both sides went pound for pound. Then ARC zeroed one more player, evening the numbers once again. Each side kept trying to send more reinforcements and took turns blocking them.

At Tower 4, ARC blocked one relocation and immediately besieged the tower. They zeroed an enemy shortly after. WIB tried to stop their siege, but they couldn’t muster up enough strength and resistance while defending themselves from an onslaught of attacks. ARC captured the tower a few minutes later. They threw attacks at every enemy they saw, and most of them succeeded. Four out of five WIB players were zeroed in quick succession, giving ARC full control of Tower 4.

In the center, ARC destroyed one relocation, which typically doesn’t happen in the center because the distance between the alliances is so far, and zeroed an enemy shortly after. ARC moved up and encroached on WIB’s side of the tower. WIB should have destroyed a couple of relocations near them to prevent that. WIB tried to send more players from the spawn, but ARC did a good job of destroying and blocking as many as they could. By the time the Central Tower opened, WIB was pushed into a corner, and ARC was sending players from Tower 4 to the surrounding area. ARC captured the tower without much resistance at the 15-minute mark. Over the next 20 minutes, WIB tried relentlessly to wrestle for control around the Central Tower, but ARC never let them get close.

At the same time, WIB moved a third of its team to Tower 1, and for a second, it seemed like WIB might slowly overwhelm ARC. Fortunately, ARC’s teammates from Tower 4 and Central Tower relocated to Tower 1 to help defend the fort. WIB congregated on the bottom side of the tower, but they let ARC relocate next to them and didn’t destroy any of their relocations. ARC slowly dwindled WIB’s number and finally captured the tower at the 19-minute mark, giving them control of four towers. They generated a massive 13,000-point lead 20 minutes into the match.

At the 27-minute mark, ARC decided to attack WIB’s home tower. One teleported and another relocated. Together, they zeroed two enemies and allowed another teammate to arrive safely. Despite having more players around the tower, WIB only had one adjacent to it, while ARC had three. ARC successfully stole the tower and put the final nail in the coffin at the 34-minute mark.

💠Summary

The MVP of the match was ARC’s DstrbD as they won with 100,000 points to WIB’s 18,300. ARC knew they were the better team going into the match, and they showed it with their early game plan. They didn’t have to contest all three objectives, but they did. They rotated well to help at towers and were cognizant of enemy relocations. Their opening relocations and distribution of players could be a lot better. They could garrison their teammates more with their third or fourth marches as well. WIB, on the other hand, should have forsaken one of the outer towers for more control at the Central Tower and the other outer tower. They started well at Tower 1, but slowly lost gas as they spread themselves too thin. They got hammered at Tower 1, and all those players could have helped take Tower 1 or Central Tower instead. Bottom-sided teams should generally give up Tower 4. WIB needs to pay attention to enemy relocations and destroy or block them accordingly. Too many times, WIB just let ARC relocate next to them. ARC moves on to face HMB, while WIB falls to the silver bracket and will fight EP.
