🔷 Introduction
Welcome to part five of my Poseidon series. A fabled immortal with a long-standing history both in and out of Infinity Kingdom. I will be diving into his story, softly based in Greek lore but also mixed with the famous Norheim. Showing how he interacts within both spaces.
🔷 Recap of part 4: "The Crown That Rests"
Strange dreams ripple through coastal cities, carrying riddles from the sea itself, and Athena chooses a humble shipwright named Lycas to seek their meaning. Alone upon the darkening waters, Lycas meets the voice of the sea, which demands to know his true purpose.
🔷 Part 5: "The Crown Beneath the Waves”
The ocean always whispered, but Poseidon knew the difference between waves and voices. This was no ordinary murmur of surf and stone. Sailors had returned with dreams clinging to their tongues, riddles carried back from the deep. Coral crowns, ships sailing backward, the sea speaking names it should not know. Each account wound its way to Olympus, but it was his domain, his silence, that the council noticed most.
Athena pressed him in the hall of the gods. “If something stirs in your realm, you cannot ignore it.”
Poseidon’s eyes flashed like stormlight. “Do you think I have not felt it? The sea is mine. When it turns strange, it turns against me as much as you.”
Zeus remained quiet, thunder hidden in his chest, while Hera dismissed it as nonsense. But Hermes’s sharp eyes caught the truth: the tide was not carrying Poseidon’s voice. Something older, something stranger, was speaking through his waters.
For nights Poseidon walked the cliffs above the Aegean. The surf below cracked white against the rocks, but in the spaces between waves he heard it again. Not his call, not his will, but a voice that rolled like an endless tide. It was not challenge or worship. It was an invitation.
He dreamed too, though gods were not supposed to. In his dream the coral crown shone in the deep. When he reached for it, the sea pulled back, as if mocking him. He woke with salt on his lips and anger in his chest.
“This crown is not for gods,” Athena said when he told her. “The oracle has already spoken. A mortal must go.”
Poseidon’s trident struck the marble of Olympus, the crack ringing through the hall. “The sea is mine. No mortal walks into its heart without me knowing. If Lycas is chosen, then he will go with my eye upon him. If he fails, the tide will sweep his bones to the bottom. If he succeeds, then I will know whose voice dares speak through what is mine.”
So Poseidon bent the current to guide the humble shipwright. From his throne of salt and coral, he watched the small vessel slip beyond the horizon, watched the gulls turn back, and watched the mortal sit alone beneath the weight of the sky. When the sea asked Lycas why he had come, Poseidon listened too.
He waited in the dark waters far below, hidden among the shifting shapes. His power was vast, but this presence that stirred was not of him, nor of any god he knew. It was as old as the first tide, as deep as the silence before storms. He had ruled the seas since the fall of the Titans, yet even he felt like an intruder in that moment.
The coral crown glimmered again, and Poseidon’s hand tightened on his trident. The mortal leaned forward. The voice of the deep grew closer.
Poseidon did not know if he wanted Lycas to be tested… or consumed.
📄 Recap Questions
How does Poseidon react to the mysterious voice speaking through his seas?
Why does Athena insist that a mortal, not a god, must confront the crown beneath the waves?
🔷 Conclusion
Strange voices emerge from the Aegean, speaking in riddles that even Poseidon cannot control, prompting Athena to send the mortal Lycas to investigate. Poseidon observes closely, uncertain whether the mortal will survive the trial or whether the ancient depths will claim him.
